Kingston and Sutton Councils have already undergone significant digital and technological transformation, allowing us to start to revolutionise the way we deliver key services, and we are now preparing for the next steps.
We have an exciting opportunity for talented Developers and Solution Architects to play a key role in driving genuine transformation throughout the councils. You’ll be involved in a range of different digital projects depending on priorities, your specific skill set, and your experience. There will always be plenty of opportunities to learn new skills to broaden your knowledge.
Much of the work will require you to work closely with our service design team, consisting of user researchers, business analysts, and digital service designers, as well as colleagues who manage our infrastructure operations. You will work with the service design team to derive a full understanding of requirements, develop user stories, translate the user stories into prototypes, iteratively test and improve the prototype, develop a working version of the product, and eventually release into the live environment where it will be continue to be monitored and improved.
You’ll be a visible presence throughout all of the projects to which you are assigned, regularly communicating with all involved and ensuring that deadlines and milestones are met.
At the senior and lead levels, whilst the roles don’t involve any direct management responsibility, we will look to you to play a leading role in the team. As a senior member of the team, you’ll inspire and act as a role model for more junior members.
Our project pipeline is bursting with many diverse projects, most of which need some degree of development expertise, such as system integration and API developments; data integration and transformation; front-end development and interaction design; architecture design; and much more.
We’re looking for talented individuals with previous development experience and expertise in any of the above.
Appointment at Lead Developer / Solution Architect level will require you to be able to demonstrate considerable experience in a leading technical architecture role which has included researching latest technologies and shaping future technical direction within an organisation. The ability to technically lead, mentor and develop others in the team is also a key requirement.
Appointment at Senior Developer level will require you to be able to demonstrate significant experience of leading development work. For instance, you may have experience of leading the design and development of solutions following in-depth analysis and improvement of business processes. Alternatively, you might have significant experience of taking the role of scrum master on development projects. Or you may have significant experience as a lead user experience designer and developer.
As a developer in a small, multi-disciplined agile team, you are likely to get involved in a huge range of associated activities. Having a flexible and adaptable attitude is essential, as is the ability to learn new technologies quickly and thoroughly. You will also need excellent communication and organisational skills.
Additional experience in any of the following, whilst not essential, would also be a distinct advantage:
- Designing, developing and/or administering CRM systems, case management systems and/or transactional web applications
- Data management, manipulation and analysis tools such as SQL, SSRS, Google BigQuery and Data Studio, Crystal Reports, Xtraction
- Systems/software design
- GIS development using ArcGIS Server
- Migrating to the cloud and/or developing in the cloud
- Working in an Agile environment
- Performing the role of scrum master
