We are currently recruiting for the Director of Housing at both Rochford District Council and Brentwood Borough Council.
This is a varied and expansive housing leadership role, working across two organisations with different models of provision. Brentwood Council directly manages around 2,500 homes, whereas Rochford Council has no directly managed housing stock. Both councils have the ambition to build new homes, but while Brentwood are already doing this within the Strategic Housing Delivery Programme, Rochford are currently developing their approach. This mixed model presents a unique breadth of professional opportunity, and therefore this is a great career move for an agile and adaptable strategic leader, who can add value across the remit.
The role’s full portfolio includes:
- Housing options
- HRA stock management
- Housing strategy and partnerships
- Strategic housing delivery programme
- Association of South-East Local Authorities (ASELA) & LDP crossover
It’s important that you can operate across both the operational and strategic aspects of the role. That means paying close attention to the direct service provision to our tenants as well as focusing on wider quality of life issues such as poverty, homelessness and the wider health and wellbeing agenda. Housing development will also be a priority in both settings, so an informed appreciation of the levers, obstacles and risks in this context will be key.
While relevant technical knowledge is important, it is your leadership skills that will be definitive in this role. You may already be working in a local authority setting, but you could also come from a housing association or similar sector. Whatever your background, it’s essential that you recognise the profile and scrutiny that comes with housing issues in our area, and that you can establish positive working relationships with elected members, partner organisations and other community stakeholders.
Please note that the postholder will be employed by Rochford District Council.
