Lincolnshire County Council have an excellent Entry Level opportunity available within the Highways Service for a Trainee Operations Technician to work in our Highways Laboratory and Site Testing team. You will be conducting testing of construction materials both out on-site and in the Laboratory to ensure compliance with specifications and workmanship requirements. This position would suit an individual with a keen interest in science or engineering who enjoys a varied work environment.

About The Role

Lincs Laboratory is a specialist in-house service of the Highways Services of Lincolnshire County Council.  The laboratory is based at Riseholme on the northern edge of Lincoln and has a varied workload which includes construction materials testing, pavement and geotechnical investigations, highway condition surveys and the capture and analysis of traffic data.

The Laboratory is UKAS accredited to ISO17025 and we are committed to providing an efficient, competitive and high-quality service to the County Council and our other clients which include public and private sector consulting engineers, suppliers and contractors.

No two days are the same – one day you could be out driving around the county conducting on-site tests and retrieving samples from highway sites and then the next day testing them in our purpose-built Laboratory.

We are not a conventional ‘white coat and test tube’ clean laboratory, we are more like an indoor building site! You won’t get too dirty though, as we provide all your work wear.

There will be a requirement to undertake some manual handling of materials with weights up to 25kg so a level of physical fitness is required.

The role may involve working some additional hours, including some weekend and night working for which enhanced rates will be paid.

Full training will be given and you will have the opportunity to obtain a nationally recognised qualification. This is a career grade position and upon successful completion of our structured training and development programme there is scope to progress to the post of Senior Operations Technician at Grade G5 (£23,194 - £25,878).

About You

This position would suit an individual with a keen interest in science or engineering who is keen to take on a varied and rewarding role. Working in the laboratory is a good introduction to a career in the Highway industry.

For this role you will need to possess good literacy, numeracy and administration skills with the ability to write legibly, record test results accurately and undertake mathematical calculations. You’ll also need to be able to follow detailed instructions and procedures in order to undertake testing activities to British and European Standards and specifications.

Most importantly we are looking for the following qualities;

  • Enthusiasm and initiative.
  • Excellent communication and team working.
  • Practical and pragmatic yet adaptable to change and circumstance.
  • Dexterous to undertake testing work both in the lab and outdoors.

A full and detailed person specification can be found within the Job Description (attached on the LCC jobs site).

About Our Offer

Along with a competitive salary we are offering:

  • A Contributory pension
  • Comprehensive benefits package including excellent discount schemes and cycle to work
