The Service

The Special Educational Needs (SEN) Team is responsible for co-ordinating and managing the statutory Education, Health and Care (EHC) needs assessment process; issuing, maintaining and reviewing EHC Plans (EHCP); securing and monitoring appropriate educational placements and provision for children and young people between 0 - 25 years of age with complex special educational needs and disabilities; co-ordinating and managing the response to appeals to the First Tier Tribunal (SEN & Disability) against decisions in relation to children's and young people’s EHC needs assessments and EHC plans; assessing eligibility for home to school travel assistance, free school meals (traded service) and SEN finance.

Your new role

You will be responsible for overseeing the statutory requirement of Education, Health and Care needs assessment and review processes; securing and monitoring special educational provision and placement and reviewing Education, Health and Care Plans for children and young people between 0 and 25 years of age who have significant, long term and complex special educational needs and/or disabilities working with the SEN Service Manager to ensure the Local Authority's statutory duties are delivered.

Supported by the SEN Service Manager, you will be expected to work autonomously. You will make and implement decisions on behalf of the local authority within statutory timeframes and to required quality assurance standards. The statutory framework within which you will work means that there can be significant impact where this is not done correctly.

What you'll need to succeed

An appropriate qualification in Education, Social Care, Advice and Guidance or equivalent or be able to demonstrate significant experience of working with children, young people and families in an education, health or social care environment.

In addition, you need a specific and detailed knowledge of special educational needs and disability and current legislation and policies affecting work with children, young people and their families  e.g., SEN Code of Practice 2014 and Children and Families Act 2014.

A clear understanding of Appeals to the First-tier Tribunal Special Educational Needs and Disability, including the single route of redress national trial and of the role of the Local authority in relation to special educational needs and disability.
