This is an exciting time to join the Council. We are expanding our legal team to ensure we can support and help deliver our clients’ Corporate Plan aspirations and we want to hear from applicants who can contribute positively to the work and culture of a growing, dynamic, and ambitious team.

We are looking to appoint a motivated and experienced lawyer to manage our legal services team, act as deputy monitoring officer and provide clear and effective leadership.

 

What will you be doing?

  •  As the Legal Services Manager, you will lead the work of the Legal Services section, ensuring it delivers an efficient and effective service to Wealden and Rother District Councils.
  • You will be reporting into the Head of Legal and Governance Services, helping advise Senior Management and elected Members, and work closely with partners and stakeholders to make a positive difference.
  • Your legal knowledge and expertise will enable you to contribute to the delivery of the Council’s Corporate Plan.
  • Your demonstrable experience will enable you to provide sound legal advice to Wealden and Rother District Councils on all aspects of their business.
  • Acting as Deputy Monitoring Officer, supporting and deputising for the Monitoring Officer in advising Wealden District Council on governance, standards and scrutiny matters.

 

What do you need?

  •  Significant relevant experience in Local Government at a professional level.
  • Significant experience in providing legal advice and guidance at a senior level, in particular in one or more of the following areas: planning, litigation, property, contracts and procurement, data protection and local government law.
  • Qualified solicitor or barrister, or Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Legal Executives, with a current practising certificate.
  • Ability to directly manage and motivate a team, model the Council’s values, have a strong work ethic with an ability to approach new challenges with a strong can-do attitude.
  • Along with advanced written skills, you will also demonstrate outstanding verbal communication skills, able to communicate complex information clearly and concisely.
  • You must have the ability to plan, manage and control a budget, with a flexible approach and excellent organisational skills.
