As an integral part of the SEND (Special Educational Needs and Disabilities) and Inclusion service, the Educational Psychology Service (EPS) supports the delivery of the Local Authority's wellbeing strategy and Special Educational Needs and Disability strategy across educational settings, children, young people and families throughout West Sussex. Based in Chichester, Worthing and Horsham, The EPS directly oversees the Portage Service, Early Years Inclusion Service and the Mental Health Support Teams in schools, with Education Psychologists (EPs) playing an important role in all.

We have a growing chargeable service focussed on wellbeing which enables us to offer a range of evidence-based support to schools and other settings, including consultation and training. We have a well-developed Emotional Literacy Support Assistant (ELSA) programme and lead on the county wide Emotionally Based School Avoidance (EBSA) support in addition to EPs contributing to other services such as our Virtual School and a specialist CAMHS service. Our high performing service consists of four area teams with offices bases in Chichester, Worthing and Horsham, each managed by a Senior Educational Psychologist. Our service offers a range of support to Schools and other settings, including mental health support, Portage, consultation and training.

This exciting new role reflects the importance placed on Wellbeing in West Sussex. You will report to the PEP and be a key member of the EPS senior management team. You will provide day-to-day management and supervision of a small area team of EPs as well as representing the service at events and panels and contributing to discussions regarding the structure and direction of the EPS.

Working alongside the PEP and Joint Commissioner for Emotional Health and Wellbeing, you will provide professional supervision to Educational Psychologists working within the Mental Health Support Teams, Virtual School, Adoption and Fostering team. You will take a professional lead, overseeing the professional development of mental health and emotional wellbeing work within the EPS and taking a lead on the development of the service response to sad events and critical incidents.

You will work closely and strategically with commissioners and key stakeholders of wellbeing services across education, health, social care, voluntary sector and leaders of education settings, to ensure effective whole school approaches, early identification of need and effective support to ensure children and families emotional wellbeing.

Key Skills:

  • Ability to demonstrate leadership skills using excellent communication and interpersonal skills across the widest variety of media. Effective coaching and challenging skills.
  • Developed prioritisation and workload management skills, with effective analysis, reflection and judgement skills.
  • Strong strategic development skills.
  • Ability to apply educational psychology in practice and understand its role in supporting Local Authority priorities in helping vulnerable children and young people.
  • Developed ability to overcome resistance and build effective relationships with children, young people, parents and carers and other professionals.
  • Ability to maintain professional boundaries in complex and emotionally challenging situations. Able to manage stressful and complex situations within the boundaries of LA policy and statutory expectations.
  • Evidenced collaborative, partnership and networking skills with internal and external partners.

Qualifications and/or experience:

  • Honours degree in Psychology, or recognised equivalent qualification.
  • Specific postgraduate professional training as an educational psychologist.
  • Postgraduate qualification / CPD in management or leadership of Educational Psychology Services.
  • Membership of the British Psychological Society as a Chartered Psychologist - Desirable
  • Registration with the Health Professions Council as a practitioner psychologist.
  • Significant experience as a Senior Educational Psychologist in at least one Local Authority.
  • Experience of management and supervision of educational psychologists, other education staff or multi-agency teams.
  • Substantial experience of working with children and families.
