Hackney is London's most diverse, dynamic neighbourhood. Reaching from the Square Mile to Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, this is an area of rapid economic growth, particularly in technology, media, fashion and other creative industries. Hackney has more green spaces than any other inner London borough; some of the capital's finest schools; first class transport connections; excellent public services; and thriving arts, cultural and retail sectors. We seek people with ambition, creativity and commitment to ensure our economic growth provides benefits for everyone and create opportunities to transform the lives of residents.
Our Libraries division offers a range of services to residents, including well-stocked adult and children's sections, PCs and Wi-Fi access, information and reference e-resources, audio and e-books and a regular variety of activities and events for the whole community.
A number of vacancies have arisen for the position of Library Assistant. You will possess first class customer service attributes; have a helpful, friendly manner, an understanding of differing cultural needs and a presentable appearance. As the first point of contact for visitors you will be expected to answer general queries and where necessary signpost users to other departments and organisations. You will be expected to organise, promote and run a variety of events for adults and children and actively promote the stock. You will ensure the library is well-presented and welcoming for people of every cultural background at all times.
It is essential that you have a genuine enthusiasm for, and love of, libraries and reading. You must demonstrate excellent customer service skills, have experience working with the public and enjoy working with people of all ages, especially children, from a wide variety of backgrounds. Good IT and verbal communication skills are essential, and knowledge of key issues surrounding the library service would also be desirable. Promotion of the service and stock will be an integral part of your duties.
