About the role
Amenity horticulture sector
Within the city of Brighton & Hove the Parks department is responsible for maintaining 45 Parks and 250 green spaces, in addition, current contracts include highway verges, cemeteries, school playing fields & Housing.
Successful candidates will be one of six Deputy Gardener Team Leaders each supporting a Gardener Team Leader who is responsible for a section of the city.
The post holders will assist and deputize for a Gardener Team Leader as instructed in leading a team of Cityparks’ employees in the safe and effective day-to-day delivery of high quality horticultural and parks related work in a variety of environments e.g. public parks, playing fields, schools, cemeteries, landscaped areas and similar public open spaces.
The post holders will work closely with a Gardener Team Leader to ensure their team fulfils council, service, area and legislative requirements. To facilitate, motivate & support staff. and be able to lead their teams independently and Act as the Senior Responsible Person in the Team Leader’s absence.
The post holders will act as principal on-site mentor for an assigned gardening Apprentice.
Qualifications in Amenity Horticulture, including fine turf management, and evidence of experience in supervising a team in a horticultural environment are essential.
The post holders will have an ability to assess risk, have a competent understanding of Health & Safety and ensure their team are following safe systems of work.
The role requires a working knowledge of plants - identification, conditions and pruning management, proven experience of fine turf management, the ability to identify pest & disease & appropriate treatments.
The role requires an experienced user of horticultural machinery to an extent that they can train staff in correct usage, working safely as a team when undertaking tasks involving machinery & maintaining equipment.
Post holders will be expected to use IT systems to: input data, evidence H&S monitoring, training & staff development forms and be confident in basic computing including Excel & Word.
Candidates are required to hold a full UK driving licence.
Contracted working hours are 37 per week, Monday to Friday
We are seeking a highly organised and efficient amenity horticulture sector operatives who can demonstrate the following qualities:
- Extensive experience of supervising and training a team in the amenity horticulture sector to carry out a diverse range of operations in green open spaces to a high standard.
- The ability to prioritise varied and demanding workload to specific deadlines and frequencies planning effectively and motivating staff to ensure targets are met.
- A conscientious approach to personal health and safety and that of colleagues and the public in the workplace, ensuring that all Health and Safety legislation, risk assessments and safe systems of work are followed.
- Extensive knowledge of horticultural machinery and equipment to ensure staff are operating equipment safely and correctly.
- A proven competency using IT management systems to capture data for training and H&S records.
- The ability to communicate effectively with colleagues, elected representatives, contractors, stakeholder groups and members of the public.
