The Coroner Service for Bedfordshire and Luton is led by Central Bedfordshire Council and also covers Bedford and Luton Borough Councils. This post provides the Senior/Assistant Coroner with support during inquests and assists those attending, including families of the bereaved, with procedural information as and when required. As a Coroner’s Court Officer, you will primarily be responsible for providing support to the Senior/Assistant Coroner in the courtroom. This will include recording proceedings, swearing in witnesses and juries and maintaining evidence. You will also be required to read statements in court from witnesses whose attendance is not required. You will assist those attending court and deal with all inquiries from families, lawyers, witnesses, the press and members of the public and advise counsel, solicitors, agencies and the public of the status of inquests. You will provide procedural information and guidance, answer inquiries etc to properly interested persons and the families of the bereaved.
Recent experience of working with members of the general public is essential. Previous experience of working in the Coroner Service is desirable but not essential as the postholder will be required to undertake appropriate training to reach the necessary level of professional competence. You will have a good standard of English and Maths; GCSE Grades A-C or equivalent qualification is desirable. You must have excellent interpersonal skills and be able to demonstrate a high standard of customer care.
