About the role
Southwark is a large, ambitious and progressive council with a ‘can do’ attitude and enviable reputation. We are committed to our ‘Fairer Futures For All’ promises which ensure that both our residents and businesses are central to everything we do. Only the best is good enough for our customers.
We have an ambitious growth and regeneration agenda with plans for 11,000 new homes in the borough.
We own the UK’s third largest district heating system (DHS), operating 220 boiler houses supplying heating to 120 separate district/communal heating networks. Our DHS provides essential heating and hot water to some 17,000 of our properties as well as our schools and other public buildings.
Our DHS underpins many of our aspirations, contributing to revitalised neighbourhoods, great housing that meets local needs and our commitment to green and efficient energy sources. But it is now in need of modernisation and investment.
If we are to provide heating services that are fit for our future, we need to assess and evaluate our options. We are seeking an innovative thinker who can help modernise and transform this service.
This is a niche and highly specialised position. You will be a committed professional with excellent technical expertise and knowledge of heating systems and thermal networks. You will have worked within a local authority environment at some point in your career and so have an appreciation of the challenges associated with this exciting project.
You will also need to be a strategic and experienced project manager with great team management skills and the ability to meet demanding targets and deadlines whilst balancing the complexities involved.
In addition, you will need excellent relationship management skills being adept at negotiating with, persuading and influencing our elected members explaining complex technical decisions to them in ways that they will understand.
Southwark has a rich and proud history, a strong sense of community and a great ability to transform and renew. It is a vibrant and enticing place to live, work and visit. As a council, we are successful, passionate and forward-thinking.
In your role, we want you to feel supported, challenged and rewarded. You will benefit from our family-friendly policies including flexible working, home working, career break opportunities and career average pension scheme plus many other staff benefits.
You will be joining a great team that strives for excellence, values its members and prides its reputation for ‘working hard’.
This position will be based in our Tooley Street offices, close to London Bridge.
We wish to make the application process as straightforward as possible and we just ask that you complete our online application form providing further information against just a couple of specific questions. You are also welcome to attach your CV to further support your application.
