We are excited to announce a new Accessibility role within the Service Design & Experience Team which will focus on resolving Accessibility issues faced by our disabled members of staff.
You will be dedicated to improving IT support for disabled staff, providing frontline support either directly or through engaging with the relevant teams, to enable solutions and provide direct support to staff who use Assistive Technology.
You will work in the IT&D Digital service and have access to a wealth of IT expertise and support from your IT colleagues. Your customers will be based across the three councils of the Orbis Partnership – Surrey County Council, East Sussex County Council and Brighton & Hove City Council. Travel will be required between the councils’ sites so a vehicle and driving license will be a compulsory requirement of the role.
Working with the IT Accessibility Specialist, you will help to create best practice for working with disabled customers and look to ways in how the current support processes could be improved.
You will engage with Disability Forums within the individual Councils and provide training material and user guides as well as technical guides for your IT colleagues.
Key to this role is the ability to engage with people and listen, be a good communicator and proactive in finding solutions, and where not immediate in coming, maintain a level of communication with the customer throughout the process.
It is important that you can readily recognise where you are not the expert, and the take time to understand the needs of the customer, being always professional and empathetic. When problems arise with Assistive Technology you will be aware on how this can impact the customer and take the appropriate steps to help address the issue.
This is a hybrid role which supports a flexible work model with a blend of in-office, and remote working. Your working location will be dependent on customer needs.
Your application will need to clearly evidence the following competencies to be shortlisted for interview:
- Demonstrate awareness of the different assistive technologies and how they function.
- Have an understanding and awareness of disability and how this can impact on IT use.
- Triage, support and resolve technical issues
- Empathetic and has a passion for enabling others to get the most out of their technology
- Capable of using plain English to explain complex concepts or technology features
- Demonstrate experience of holding 1 to 1 or group sessions to upskill staff
- Provide IT support to customers with Accessibility needs to ensure the timely and effective resolution of Incidents and Tasks concerning accessibility equipment, software and services thereby maintaining productivity within the organisation.
- Ensure the smooth, timely and successful installation of accessibility equipment
- Hold 1 to 1 and group sessions to upskill staff
- Actively communicate and promote accessibility technology and features
- Collaborate with Tech Advocates, IT Support, Business Partners, Trainers, Digital Consultants and Project teams to achieve required outcomes.
- Produce training material, self-help guides, videos, blogs and forum updates
- Thorough knowledge of the desktop environment including hardware characteristics, Operating Systems, servers, office productivity systems (e.g. Office), business line applications, disk imaging, problem management, and backup & recovery.
- Knowledge of data infrastructure design and development, security, protocols, LANs and WANs, data standards, types of private network, and addressing.
- Install, maintain, and support accessibility services covering a range of locations.
- Enable the use, support and development of applications and systems in accordance with business requirements and targets.
Your starting salary will be pro rata if the above position is part-time or term-time only.
Work Permits: we may be able to obtain a Work Permit for this post but this is subject to meeting the requirements of the UK Border Agency’s Points-based Immigration System.
