Conservation, Urban Design and Sustainability Manager

PO10, Salary £56,208 - £57,234 per annum

Permanent, Full Time

Hackney Council is looking for an urban design professional to lead a team with a significant role in shaping Hackney’s future.

We are very proud of Hackney’s built environment and so are Hackney’s communities. It is rich and diverse in terms of historic buildings, open space and architecture and we are looking for someone with ambition, creativity and commitment to ensure that new development continues to be of the highest quality design, supports the Council’s wider sustainability objectives and that our built heritage is preserved for everyone to enjoy into the future.

As Conservation, Urban Design and Sustainability Manager, you will lead a team with expertise ranging from architecture to tree preservation, helping to support the Planning Service in the preparation of policy and masterplan documents, advising and helping to shape planning applications and ensuring that the boroughs built heritage is appropriately preserved and managed.

As part of the leadership team you will also be responsible for initiating service improvements, managing Hackney’s Design Review Panel and promoting and celebrating excellence in urban design and heritage conservation across the Council and beyond.

We need someone with an analytical approach to working, excellent organisational skills and exceptional written and oral communication skills that can influence to a senior level. You will have a relevant post-graduate qualification and be eligible for membership to RIBA or similar professional body. You need at least 5 years’ experience ideally in a similar Local Government role with managerial responsibilities, and should have an understanding of the political and social context within which you are working.

Hackney is one of the UK’s highest performing local authorities, serving one of London’s best places to live and work. We have achieved a huge amount: our services, our schools, our public spaces are all amongst the very best. We have changed the reputation, not just of the Council, but of Hackney itself. Bringing jobs and investment into the borough, securing the legacy from the 2012 Games, and making this a place of which we can all be proud.

If the opportunity of working here excites you, visit www.hackney.gov.uk/jobs-careers to apply.

You must include a supporting statement, no longer than two sides of A4, addressing how your skills, knowledge and experience meet aspects of the post set out in the Job Description and Person Specification.

Closing date: 23 September 2018 (22:59hrs)

Interviews: Week commencing 8th October.

We are passionate about equal opportunities, welcoming a diversity of talent and those interested in flexible working.
