Job introduction

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a dedicated full-time AMHP to work within Brighton and Hove.

Interview date: TBC

For an informal discussion regarding the roles available, please contact: Dominic Marley, Lead AMHP/Service Manager on 07471217487

About the role

You will work autonomously within a supportive and 'central', or ‘hub’ AMHP team, carrying out the statutory functions of an AMHP, with all ages across the city. Since 2010 we have provided this service 24/7 developing a responsive and person-centred approach to our work.
The service is innovative and forward thinking. It was the first AMHP Service in the country to use a smartphone app to complete statutory MHA paperwork.  We have established clear protocols with Sussex Partnership NHS Foundation Trust to ensure clients and carers receive support from the Trust where admission is delayed. The Council supports hybrid working, with AMHPs working from home where possible, and having access to office space at Mill View Hospital and other Council locations.

The team has excellent working relationships with our NHS mental health colleagues, and other agencies such as Sussex Police.

You will be involved in assessments in a variety of locations across the city and occasionally elsewhere in our neighbouring LSSA or further afield. As well as assessments for admission under s2 or s3 you will be involved in CTO assessments, applications to Court and assessments for Guardianship.

A shift system operates over 7 days between 08:00hrs and 22:00hrs with a ‘stand-by’ service overnight, reflecting the demands on the service. You would be expected to contribute to weekend and out of hours working including standby working. The pay offer reflects the nature of the work and out of hours working with enhancements for out of hours worked, standby fees and an additional payment of £2,600 p.a. for a position within the central AMHP team. Consultation is currently taking place to implement 37 hour/4 day working week for full time AMHPs in the central team

Professional supervision is provided by the AMHP Service Manager, while the team environment provides opportunities for additional consultation and reflection. The team provides the learning placements for trainee AMHPs within the city each year, with Practice Education roles undertaken by a central team AMHP.

You will need to be an AMHP with a passion for fast moving crisis work assessing, mutli-tasking and thinking on your feet and a desire to support people who are experiencing acute emotional and mental distress, and their relatives and carers, in keeping with the legal powers and associated Codes of Practice.

While out of hours working experience is not essential, we are looking for qualified AMHPs who have sufficient experience and can demonstrate the appropriate values, skills and knowledge of a robust AMHP.

The current job description is that of a Senior Social Worker, so these vacancies are open to registered social workers, currently approved (or eligible for approval) to practice as an AMHP. However we would welcome enquiries from occupational therapists and mental health nurses who are Approved Mental Health Professionals.
We offer a market supplement of £2,600 (pro rata)

As part of your application, you will need to complete your education and work history and upload a supporting statement. Your supporting statement is the most important part of your application as it will be used in the shortlisting process to assess whether you meet the essential requirements for the role that are set out in the person specification and to decide whether you should be offered an interview. Before you start your application, please read our guidance here Supporting statement guidance as this gives important advice which will increase your chance of success in the shortlisting process.

Your starting salary will be pro rata if the above position is less than 37 hours or term-time only.
