We have an exciting vacancy for an experienced housing officer or temporary accommodation officer to join our team. In Housing Needs and Standards we provide a range of housing services, including homeless applications, housing advice and the provision of emergency and temporary accommodation. We are committed to meaningful joint working, the prevention of homelessness and continuous improvement in our services.

Reporting to the team leader, you will support and develop others within the team to manage placements of homeless applicants in emergency and temporary accommodation across Eastbourne and Lewes, including procuring, booking, sign ups, arrears management, warnings and evictions, complaints, maintenance issues and contributing to the wider development of the service. You will hold more complex casework and also oversee the lettings and management of a number of commercial tenancies; a growing area for the councils. You will work to identify opportunity to increase available accommodation options, ensure our portfolio meets the needs of the customers we support, and report on numbers in emergency accommodation against our corporate targets.

This is a fast-paced, varied and challenging environment supporting clients with a range of multiple and complex needs. You will be well organised with strong communication skills and have a commitment to providing service excellence. Experience of multi-agency working in a housing or homelessness setting, or experience in letting and tenancy management is preferable, as is a good comprehension of the needs of homeless clients, as well as the challenges this presents to agencies who work with them.

Although the Housing Needs and Standards team work predominantly from home, the Hours and days may vary according to the needs of the service and you will need to be able to travel regularly to various properties across East Sussex including Eastbourne, Lewes, Newhaven and Seaford.

We work across both Lewes District Council and Eastbourne Borough Council and as a result our area is unique in its mix of environments, including the larger urban area of Eastbourne, the historic county town of Lewes, small towns and villages in and around the National Park and a large area of coastal strip.

Housing Needs and Standards has enhanced its commitment to personal development. You will be able to access a number of different training opportunities and as an employee of Lewes District and Eastbourne Borough councils, you will have access to a number of benefits. This includes:

  • Transport discounts, including a 15% discount on some Southern Rail Journeys and a 10% discount at Halfords on bikes, cycling accessories, servicing and parts
  • Minimum annual leave entitlement of 25 days increasing to 29 days after completing five years’ service
  • A flexible working environment, allowing you to work remotely and flexibly – helping you achieve a better work/life balance
  • Discounted use of gyms and sports centres
