We are now looking for an experienced Enforcement officer to join our Development Management Team, to be a key contributor to the management of development in the Borough; someone who can really make an impact. Balancing the protection of the countryside with the accommodation of large scale development presents an exciting and challenging workload.

Working in a Borough that faces a diverse range of Planning challenges you will be responsible for leading the Council’s duties in respect of all planning enforcement matters whilst managing our small but extremely dedicated team of Enforcement Officers.

With specific and recent experience of enforcement and investigation procedures, you will be responsible for leading the implementation of Planning Enforcement processes and procedures within the Borough of Swale, being responsible for leading on the most complex and controversial enforcement cases across the whole borough.

With at least 5 years previous experience of dealing with complex and sensitive compliance and enforcement issues, you will be responsible for responding to enforcement complaints and breaches of planning control; assessing them against policy and other material planning considerations to formulate recommendations. You will advise senior officers and be expected to work closely with Councillors and the community on planning enforcement issues within their areas.

As an experienced officer who can hit the ground running, you will be adept at giving evidence in Court and/or Public Inquiries, and you will need to have strong negotiation skills with the ability to negotiate on all forms of development proposals.

You will also be a strong team player, with good inter-personal and communication skills including experience of dealing with the public and difficult customers. You should be self-motivated and have a flexible attitude towards work as some visits may be required outside of normal office hours. A driving licence with use of your own car is essential.

This is an exciting opportunity for an enthusiastic individual wanting to gain a wide breadth of experience across a wide range of planning issues and to be involved with a progressive and innovative team aiming to make a significant difference to the quality of life for those living and working within the Borough.

Working for Swale Borough Council, you’ll have the opportunity to develop your skills and experience within an organisation that prides itself on supporting its staff. We encourage all types of vocational and technical training & qualifications, including management and leadership programmes.  In addition to learning & development, we also offer many flexible working opportunities, including job share, flexi time, nine-day fortnight, compressed hours and home working

This is a permanent, full time position based in Swale House but we would consider applications for flexible working in line with our New Ways of Working Policy.
