About The Job

We are looking for a Highway Inspector to support the delivery of a safe highway network to all residents of West Sussex.

Salary: £26,446 to £29,174 per annum.
Working Pattern: Full time, 37 hours per week.
Contract Length: Permanent.
Location: Base Jobs Depot, Sayers Common however, travel around the County required.

As a Highway Inspector you will ensure regular inspection and repair of the highways and enforcement of highway legislation.

The focus of this role is undertaking inspections of the county's carriageways and footways. You will report to the Senior Highway Inspector and work as part of an inspection team.

You will be required to travel around the county independently and will need to plan your work efficiently. You will use your own initiative when carrying out duties and these will include physical activities such as undertaking walked and cycled inspections. Duties also include picking up manhole covers, trimming vegetation and shovelling debris away from gutters and gully tops.

You will be required to assess the risk of defects you identify and raise jobs for safety repairs via our contractor as necessary. You will work closely with the wider team and engineers to feed back observations on condition of the asset to enable effective planning of longer-term repairs.

Experience and skills

Key Skills:

  • Sound communication skills. Additionally, the post holder may need developed advisory skills to explain complex highways issues to members of the public in response to queries.
  • Ability to anticipate and identify problems, plan solutions, make sound pragmatic problem-solving decisions and make best use of available resources.
  • Excellent proven written communication skills.
  • Good professional observational skills in order to locate faults in the highway and ability to keep accurate records in order to document findings.
  • Ability to remain calm when under pressure and be able to switch work between competing needs during the course of a day.

Qualifications and/or experience:

  • BTEC/ONC in Construction or Engineering, or a related subject, or 'A' levels, or equivalent experience.
  • Full current driver's licence.
  • Basic theoretical knowledge of engineering/civil construction for planning improvements and repairs to the highway.
  • Sound and accurate IT knowledge.
  • Knowledge of the Highways Act and NRSWA, and other relevant pieces of legislation, including health and safety, for enforcement work.
  • General technical and customer service experience, preferably in highways environment.
  • Proven successful experience of working as part of a team in order to effectively meet objectives within agreed/necessary timescales.
