Starting Salary: From £29,174  per annum (pro rata for part-time)
Hours: Variable / 18.5 per week
Contract: Permanent

Diversity: We are an inclusive employer and value a diverse workforce

Job Duties:

Role: HALS is seeking a qualified archivist to work flexibly to support funded projects. Initial project work to appraise and catalogue archive collections is the result of successful funding applications.

Description: The Archivist: Projects will initially work on two projects:

Following a generous award as part of ‘The New Jerusalems: post-war New Town archives in Britain and Ireland’ consortium funded by the Wellcome Trust, the Archivist: Projects will catalogue series of plans relating to Stevenage New Town to complete the work within the next two years.

In addition, there is a smaller amount of funding remaining from a previous project to catalogue some military records. A further application regarding a third collection is currently being prepared.

This role offers varied and flexible duties with the potential to contribute to a range of projects that support the delivery of our Shared Heritage priorities and open up the archives to wider audiences.

The Candidate: You will have a recognised qualification in archives administration and have experience of cataloguing a range of archive materials. Experience of cataloguing with Axiell CALM is desirable. Many of the records are in a delicate condition so knowledge of collections care is essential.

You will have the ability to meet project deadlines and have excellent communication skills to promote project work, give talks and create content for web pages, social media posts and reports. As part of the first project, the postholder will write user guides regarding New Towns records.

There may be occasions when you could be asked to participate in other archive work at HALS, subject to funding being available, and this is reflected in the job specification.

Location: Due to the nature of the work, you will be working at Hertfordshire Archives and Local Studies at County Hall in Hertford but there may be occasional opportunities to work remotely depending on the stage of the project or to take part in outreach elsewhere in the county.

HALS was awarded Accredited status by the National Archives in 2017 and we are due to reapply in 2023. HALS continues to deliver Shared Heritage our 10 year strategy to ensure preservation of our historic collections for present and future generations.

Closing Date: Tuesday 21st June 2022
Interview Date: Week commencing Monday 27th June 2022
