Job Duties:

Hertfordshire Archives and Local Studies preserve archive and printed resources for the study of Hertfordshire past and present, and promotes their use. This is an exciting time for our service as we move forward with the delivery of ‘Shared Heritage’ our 10 year strategy to ensure preservation of our historic collections for present and future generations, to exploit technology to improve services and progress digital online resources and to work in partnership to increase opportunities for access and leaning. HALS has been awarded Accredited status by The National Archives.

As an Archive Library Assistant you will assist in the provision of a high quality customer service. Your main areas of responsibility will include providing an efficient enquiry, reprographics and referral service to users in person, by telephone, email and by letter. You will be expected to retrieve books and documents from storage areas (including driving a leased van to retrieve those held off-site). You will assist with collecting and processing of archive and local studies materials, and use catalogues and indexes.

You will use ICT to provide services to customers and carry out collections work including for example, assisting with digitisation work to photograph, scan, process and preserve archive material.                                                                                       
You will contribute to promotional events, including group visits; this may include occasional out of hours activity. You will provide support for volunteers. You will have an eye for detail and assist with operational and clerical duties.

As a customer facing role this job is based onsite. There is a provisional timetable worked on a weekly rota. Normal work pattern is Monday to Friday with approximately 10 Saturday openings per year and approximately 6 Tuesday evenings per year.
