Full time – 37 hour. Permanent. £32,798 - £37,568
It’s an exciting time for our Highways & Traffic Services Team. Over the last year we’ve
taken great strides to modernise our offer; embarking on a Boroughwide Residential Roads
& Pavement programme to improve the Council’s highway network. We have also embarked on a Council wide leadership development programme whilst developing an organisational culture through our Team Reading values. Further development plans are in place and we need you to help us achieve them.

About the role
We want our people to be the best they can and to give them a platform from which they
can deliver the highest quality services to our residents. Central to this is ensuring that the public highway is maintained to an acceptable standard by assisting in managing the
maintenance of our carriageway, footway and highway structures as well as implementing
drainage and flood alleviation works. This will also involve liaising with our many
stakeholders including MP’s, Councillors, Residents, Utility companies and internal Council
departments. Reporting to the Highway Maintenance & Asset Management Engineer this role will be within the Highway Maintenance team who focus on delivering annual programmes of carriageway and footway resurfacing, manage the structural maintenance programme, design and implement flood and drainage schemes, manage our winter maintenance contractor and maintain our Highway Asset Management systems.
Key areas of responsibility include:
- Acting as the Engineer’s Representative on allocated projects
- Assisting in the preparation of contract documents including specifications, drawings, bill of quantities
- To project manage (including budget monitoring) schemes and report progress to the Highway Maintenance & Asset Management Engineer
- Provision of professional and technical advice in relation to the delivery of highways and transport services in Reading
- Supervision of Highway works
- Liaison with other Council departments and outside bodies

About you
We’re looking for someone who has Highway maintenance experience, someone that enjoys a challenge and can make things happen, whilst never losing sight of the customer, our residents, and users of the public highway. You should be experienced in Highway
Maintenance and have the ability and desire to bring out the best in yourself and those
around you.
Specific requirements:
- Highway maintenance experience gained in a large, complex organisation with
- multiple stakeholders
- A good and up to date knowledge of Highways legislation and best practice
- Experience in the preparation of contracts
- Ability to manage a large diverse workload
