Sustainable Travel Officer
An opportunity has arisen for a Sustainable Travel Officer in the Active & Safer Travel Team. The role will support the team to implement Hertfordshire County Council’s Local Transport Plan (4).
Forecasts predict that by 2050, the population of Hertfordshire will have grown by around 400,000 to over 1.5m, having a major impact on traffic congestion and journey times, particularly during peak travel periods which includes pupils being driven to/from school.
The postholder will help deliver Hertfordshire County Council’s (HCC’s) Growth Agenda by assisting new and expanding schools coming through the planning process to transfer to the Modeshift STARS on-line national travel plan accreditation scheme, ensuring those schools maintain bronze accreditation for the first 7 years following occupation. It is an important role that must focus energy and resources based on evidence of need by collecting data, evidence and evaluations to direct and inform programmes of work.
A key element of the role is to increase the number of schools with an accredited Modeshift STARS travel plan. This will help evidence that there is a shift away from single occupancy car use towards active travel i.e., walking, cycling, and scooting to school. Assisting and supporting schools to achieve and maintain Green, Bronze, Silver, Gold or Platinum accreditation also sits within this post.
The postholder will be trained to deliver our road safety programmes to quality assured standards. This will involve working with schools and other stakeholders to encourage non-car-based modes of transport, principally walking, cycling, and scooting, based on the needs of the area and upon known evidence-based risks and trends.
The role requires the postholder to help develop and promote a programme of road safety and sustainable travel campaigns that encourage behaviour change around the school commute.
