Salary: £9.87 per hour inclusive of accrued holiday entitlement.

Hours per week: casual appointment – hours available between 3.00pm and 6.00pm daily on a rota basis, plus regular weekend work available. 

Guildford Borough Council has immediate opportunities available for play workers to deliver our outdoor community play sessions for children and young people. The Guildford Playranger service is looking for highly motivated and organised individuals who are able to advocate for and demonstrate the value and importance of good quality, outdoor play for children in the borough.

The Playranger team assists in the day-to-day delivery of the Playranger service, providing accessible and challenging outdoor play opportunities in local parks and open spaces across the borough. The Playranger sessions have an overall aim to encourage, support and widen accessibility to play opportunities for children within the borough; to play freely and enjoy the benefits of playing in the outdoors in their community. The primary age range of children for this service is eight to twelve years old.

The role is varied over the course of the year and you will be expected to deliver outdoor play sessions, events and activities in all weathers.

The successful applicant will be required to undertake essential training and will have access to a range of extra training opportunities related to the role.

This post requires an enhanced DBS disclosure for regulated activity working with children and a full UK driving licence. Guildford Borough Council is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people and expects all staff and volunteers to share this commitment.

Job Profile

We are looking for someone who is able to demonstrate an understanding of the Playwork Principles and have a passion for working with children from diverse backgrounds and communities, through supporting their need to play.

The successful applicant will be able to demonstrate experience in working with children or young people and hold a full driving license. In addition, a level 2 or 3 qualification in playwork, childcare or youth related discipline is desirable but not essential. Knowledge and experience in sports and bush craft activities is also beneficial.

Main duties  

1. To support the delivery and planning of a varied programme of inclusive outdoor play opportunities, which encourage children to play in their communities, particularly providing for those children who are disadvantaged through access to play.

2. To carry out the delivery of all play opportunities under the values and principles set out in ‘Best Play’ in order to deliver a child centered community outdoor play service.

3. To ensure the Playranger service is delivered effectively by following policies and procedures for provision in accordance with best practice, health and safety and safeguarding.

4. To understand and be able to assess and manage risk in play opportunities delivered by the Playranger service through a robust and considered approach to risk benefit assessments, in order to deliver a safe and accessible service to the community.

5. To be an advocate for, and demonstrate the value and importance of, good quality outdoor play opportunities as a fundamental means of improving the enjoyment, social, physical and mental health and wellbeing of children in Guildford.

6. To support the monitoring and evaluation of the Playranger service to inform and develop future service delivery.

7. To support the Community Wellbeing Team with a varied programme of user and non-user, children, parent and stakeholder consultations on a regular basis, to engage the community in the development and delivery of the service and to identify the current play needs of children in the borough.

8. To support the maintenance of the equipment and resources including the Playranger van.

9. To be responsible for driving the Playranger van to and from locations across the borough.

It is in the nature of the work that tasks and responsibilities are in many circumstances unpredictable and varied. All staff are expected to work in a flexible way when the occasion arises. 

Hours of work

The hours of work for this post are offered on a casual basis. Hours are available Monday to Friday between 3.00pm and 6.00pm. Regular weekend work available.

Working hours will be outdoors and involve the direct delivery of play opportunities to children and young people.
