This role is within the Recruitment Support Team which is based in the Human Resources and Organisational Development service. It is a busy team responsible for assisting candidates and supporting hiring managers right across the Council to make more than 1000 appointments every year to a diverse variety of roles ranging from apprentices to our most senior management positions. East Sussex County Council is the largest employer in the County and at the heart of delivering a broad range of vital services to the residents of East Sussex, protecting the most vulnerable people as well as supporting economic growth and helping our vibrant communities and surrounding environment to thrive. 

As one of the first people that a prospective job applicant or successful candidate will come into contact with our recruitment team have a key role to play as ambassadors for the organisation and are perfectly placed to ensure the recruitment and onboarding process for new starters and hiring managers alike is a seamless and engaging one. 

Recruitment Assistants are responsible for quality assurance checking adverts undertaking  pre-employment checks, such as seeking references, verifying qualifications and relevant safeguarding checks, creating contracts of employment, and ensuring that new starters are set up on our HR information system. This is done whilst maintaining great communication with hiring managers and candidates. Ensuring that everyone is kept well informed at all stages of the pre-employment process and the customer experience meets with service expectations and is at the heart of everything we do. 

This role also offers a  great opportunity to gain an introduction in to a range of recruitment and wider HR related scenarios and can provide  an invaluable foundation for anyone looking to launch a career in these areas of work.

What are we looking for?

You may be pleased to hear it’s not essential to have any prior experience of working in recruitment because we’ll teach you everything you need to know. You will need to be a good communicator and take pride in the work you do. You cannot be afraid to get on the phone to keep candidates and hiring managers updated on how pre-employment checks are progressing whilst working on initiative and being proactive in chasing required information. Managing a large case load of appointed candidates and working to monthly payroll deadlines means it is also essential that you’re able to focus and prioritise work whilst keeping an eye on attention to detail when drafting contracts and setting candidates up on payroll.

The post is based at County Hall in Lewes, East Sussex, but with flexibility for regular weekly home working as part of a hybrid working model. Due to the ongoing pandemic, it is expected that this role will be undertaken exclusively from home initially.

Additional information

Your starting salary will be pro rata if the above position is part-time or term-time only.

Work Permits: we may be able to obtain a Work Permit for this post but this is subject to meeting the requirements of the UK Border Agency’s Points-based Immigration System.
