About the role

Do you want to be part of an expanding team of dedicated people helping to protect and serve? If so, East Sussex Trading Standards is looking for you!

The Trading Standards Team uses a wide range of consumer protection legislation to make sure goods and services sold and provided within the county are safe and legal. We cover a diverse and interesting range of areas such as product safety, animal health and welfare, illicit markets, food standards and counterfeit goods. We use a combination of advice, support and guidance as well as formal criminal prosecutions to ensure the County is kept safe.

An exciting opportunity has become available to join the Team as a Senior Trading Standards Officer. As a senior officer, you will supervise a small multidisciplinary team of officers in conducting their work, whilst dealing with potentially complex enquiries of your own. You will be a fully qualified officer with detailed knowledge in trading standards law. However, it is essential that you are able to lead and develop inexperienced officers as the team currently has five trainees who are keen to learn from you. This role could suit someone who is keen to expand their experience and develop in a supportive team that carries out the full range of enforcement responsibilities. In return you will be given many opportunities to enjoy the variety of work that comes with a proactive service like ours.

This includes port import work, animal welfare and fraud – all of which could take you from one end of this scenic county to the other!

Together we make a difference and make headlines! Check out local and national media for what we have achieved this past year.

Whilst the role is based in Lewes, we have for some years offered a very flexible working approach which supports a positive work life balance, focusing on the outcomes of your work rather than the location of where you achieve it from. During the pandemic we have further advanced this approach with leading edge technology that equip our officers to work from home, from an office or from the middle of a farmer’s field! Our flexible working will enable us to consider part-time working or a job share.

If you would like to discuss this role further, please call the Trading Standards Team Manager, Richard Strawson on 07803 575998, or Paul Davison, Enforcement & Investigations Manager on 07827 980181.

Additional information

Your starting salary will be pro rata if the above position is part-time or term-time only.

Work Permits: we may be able to obtain a Work Permit for this post but this is subject to meeting the requirements of the UK Border Agency’s Points-based Immigration System.

From 6 April 2011 the Home Office has placed a permanent restriction on the number of migrant workers that all Tier 2 (General) Sponsors can recruit. Due to the restrictions we cannot guarantee that individuals that meet the requirements of the Points-based Immigration System will be issued with clearance to obtain work permits.
