About the role

Background

Hurstpierpoint College is a successful independent school, and a significant medium-sized enterprise in mid- Sussex with approximately 450 employees and a turnover of some £30 million pa.  It is both a stimulating and a pleasant place in which to work.  The College is amongst the most successful independent schools in Sussex.  It is co-educational and comprises a Senior School, Preparatory School, and Pre Prep with close to 1,300 pupils in all.  Over half the pupils in the Senior School are boarders (weekly or flexible).

Overviews

We are seeking to appoint an experienced Biology Laboratory Technician to provide and prepare Biology practicals and demonstrations for Years 9 to 13. You will be part of a team of 4 technicians (Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Prep School) plus two assistant technicians.

Principal Responsibilities 

These include but are not limited to the following, plus those responsibilities detailed in the Science Department's Safety Policy:

 

Lesson Requirements

• Provide and prepare equipment, biological material and chemicals for each lesson.

• Set up demonstration experiments as requested.

• Collect and clear away equipment and chemicals after each lesson, including disposing of waste – there is an assistant to help with this

 

Laboratory Maintenance

• Keep the Prep Room tidy and well organised, as well as the apparatus drawers and cupboards within each Laboratory.

• Refill reagent bottles held in the Prep Room.

• Carry out half termly checks on the labs and report any issues

 

 

Care of Biological Material

• Maintain the plants in the greenhouse.

• Maintain and house other living organisms.

 

Apparatus Maintenance

• Undertake routine maintenance of the department's equipment, forwarding items for specialist repair as necessary.

• Check and maintain the contents and hygienic state of departmental freezer and refrigerators.

 

Stock-taking

• Complete an annual stock check all chemicals, glassware and other apparatus

• Prepare, in consultation with the Head of Biology, orders for biological material, chemicals and apparatus.

• Unpack and check orders as received.

 

Stationery

• Manage the provision of stationery for classes.

• With the Head of Biology ensure that pupil booklets and test go out to classes in good time.

• Record books issued and report any unreturned books.

Your starting salary will be pro rata if the above position is part-time or term-time only.
