Job Summary

MyST is a therapeutic service for children looked after with complex needs, who are at risk of being placed in out-of-area residential or institutional care due to their emotional and mental health needs. This is an exciting opportunity to be part of a multidisciplinary service, providing therapeutic intervention and support to children, young people, their carers and families by agreeing and directly delivering interventions. With appropriate direction, you will enable positive and agreed outcomes to be achieved, in accordance with organisational policies, procedures and regulatory requirements.

Full Advert

An opportunity has arisen for the appointment of two full time Lead Therapeutic Practitioners in the new MyST team within the Social Services Department. You will be expected to work as part of a multidisciplinary team, ensuring the provision of a responsive, high quality, customer and outcome focused service to children, young people, their families and partner agencies across Blaenau Gwent.

The MyST service has been established through a partnership between Blaenau Gwent and Monmouthshire County Councils in 2019 and now each local authority is developing their own independent MyST team. MyST provides a range of support to the most vulnerable looked after children and young people with the most complex needs who tend to experience multiple foster care placement and other service breakdowns. Their risk taking and challenging behaviours, as well as their significant mental health needs, often exceed the typical resources of Local Authority services. MyST has been established to provide intensive support to such children including the recruitment, training and specialized support of therapeutic foster carers.

Essential requirements include:

  • A professional qualification in health, social care, youth and community work, teaching or a recognised therapy qualification with appropriate professional registration, UK registration is required for this role
  • Knowledge and understanding of how children/young people make attachments and the impact of developmental trauma on development
  • Understanding of children/young people’s physical, intellectual, linguistic, social and emotional growth and development, and understanding of how children/young people learn
  • Experience of working in a therapeutic way with children and families who have experienced trauma and who have complex mental health needs

You must also be I.T. literate, possess effective negotiating and problem solving skills and knowledge of anti-discriminatory practice. Full UK driving licence and access to a vehicle for work purposes are essential requirements.

Thorough pre-employment screening is undertaken during the recruitment process. The post holder will be required to complete an application for a Disclosure of Criminal Records.
