Harlow is a former new town designated in 1947 but our heritage reaches back to the Roman times making the collections local, diverse and unexpected. The Museum & Walled Gardens sit in the Mark Hall Estate, the heart of the building is the remaining stable block of the former 17th Century manor house and the 3 magical walled gardens are integral to the offer of the site. These outdoor spaces have been crucial over the past 18 months for leisure, and family activities with nature being topical learning subjects. We are approaching this coming year with ambition and renewed excitement for the museum service. We are seeking a highly motivated, experienced individual to deliver our education and outreach offer to schools.

Job purpose

Harlow has over 30 schools with slightly differing needs. This job will develop bespoke sessions to meet the needs of visiting schools and also be flexible in delivering outreach sessions to Harlow schools where the situation does not allow for visits to the museum. The officer will use the collections and support learning in an engaging and relevant way which helps develop the local communities understanding of the heritage of Harlow. There will be the chance to start new streams of learning with young people building cultural ambassadors of the future.

This job will be part of a small, passionate team so we are looking for a team player with the ability to support and guide our wonderful volunteers. This important role will be key to the smooth running of the museum, with some opening and closing of the site and be a role model in delivering a high quality visitor learning experience.

There is a necessity to be IT literate with a range of administrative functions including on line meetings, delivery of sessions, recording data and writing learning programmes which supports the delivery of the museum’s educational offer and the general operation of the museum. Mobility and eagerness to learn about the Town is essential.

For more information in the first instance about this role contact Corrina Dunlea, Harlow Museum Manager corrina.dunlea@harlow.gov.uk. Please note Harlow Council offices are closed between 24 December 2021 and January 2022
