Job introduction

Brighton & Hove City Council has a reputation as a leader for equality and inclusion and community cohesion, serving a diverse and vibrant city. It is our ambition to strive for excellence in everything we do, whether as an Employer of Choice or a City Council building a fairer city with a sustainable future.

Key to achieving this aim is the delivery of our Fair and Inclusive Action Plan, our commitment to becoming an anti-racist council, our planned Accessible City Strategy and the renewal of our status as a City of Sanctuary.

We are now looking for exceptional people to take our equality and inclusion work to the next level and deliver on our ambition.

We are looking for four new staff to join our Communities, Equality and Third Sector Service: an Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) Manager, two Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Officers and an Administrator. Together, with an existing EDI officer, you will be the council’s brain and heart for equality, diversity and inclusion.

If you are tenacious, empathetic and creative, if you have a thorough understanding of the issues faced by people in relation to their legally protected characteristics, if you have expert knowledge of current and emerging EDI issues, we have a role that may suit you.

Interviews week commencing 22nd December

For an informal chat about the role or to flag a reasonable adjustment for the application process, please call Emma McDermott, Head of Communities, Equality and Third Sector, 07825113908

About the role

As the manager of the EDI team, you will develop and implement our Equality & Inclusion strategy to enable us to be a best practice civic leader in equality, diversity and inclusion, and reducing inequality. This will include leading on multi-agency strategic projects under the guidance of the council’s Tourism, Equality, Communities and Culture Committee and the city’s Equality and Inclusion Partnership.

You will also lead a high quality team of EDI officers providing advice, guidance and support to council services to be exemplar in their accessibility and service delivery to all residents in the city.

Collaborating with councillors, communities and council services, your work will be critical to EDI being at the heart of how the council operates: its decision-making, business planning, service delivery and as an employer and civic leader.

We are a workplace that wants you to bring your whole self to work, offering you a wide-ranging benefits package and a team of talented staff who all care deeply about the city they serve.

Brighton & Hove is a diverse city. As an employer, we want to see this diversity reflected in our workforce. We value having staff with fresh and diverse ideas, perspectives and experiences. We welcome applications from individuals from all backgrounds and will support you to be your best at Brighton & Hove City Council by providing reasonable adjustments, ongoing staff development, a clear behaviour framework for all and encouraging staff to join one of our four staff networks.

We are a Disability Confident employer and all candidates who are disabled or have a long term health condition are guaranteed an interview if they are able to demonstrate they meet the minimum criteria. If you need adjustments to apply due to a disability or long term health condition, please contact the recruiting manager.

As part of your application, you will need to complete your education and work history and upload a supporting statement. Your supporting statement is the most important part of your application as it will be used in the shortlisting process to assess whether you meet the essential requirements for the role that are set out in the person specification and to decide whether you should be offered an interview. Before you start your application, please read our guidance here (Supporting statement guidance (brighton-hove.gov.uk)) as this gives important advice which will increase your chance of success in the shortlisting process.
