Hertsmere is located in southern Hertfordshire and is an attractive environment in which to live and work. It adjoins Greater London and has excellent road and rail links making London and the Home Counties easily accessible.

Hertsmere’s Environmental Health department is looking to recruit someone who wishes to enhance their career within a small and friendly team.

We are looking for a new member of staff within the Environmental Protection Team to undertake a varied role dealing with stray dogs (collection, rehoming), enforcement of microchipping requirements, animal licensing inspections, dog fouling and other dog-related ASB complaints and the investigation of nuisance complaints (noise, odour and light). This role will oversee the complete process for the above from initial complaint, to investigation and progressing to prosecution as necessary.

We are keen to receive applications from experienced dog wardens and environmental health technical officers. Applicants should have an understanding of animal behaviour, animal licensing requirements and enforcement procedures along with experience of working closely with the Police on animal-related matters.

The Council is committed to invest in our teams to ensure continuous progression of our staff through training and professional development. As Technical Officer, there will be the opportunity to undertake a Level 3 Animal Licensing qualification enabling the post-holder to carry out Animal Licencing inspections.

The successful candidate will be well-organised, efficient and dependable; used to working within a fast-moving and challenging environment. They will be able to adjust to demands and define priorities, work rapidly and accurately and have the ability to communicate effectively with other professionals, elected members, senior managers within the Council and the general public.

This role requires a flexible approach to working hours as, in addition to participating in the standby out of hours service (for which an additional allowance is paid), evening and weekend work may be necessary.  A full driving licence and access to a car for work purposes is also required (a van is provided for the collection of strays).

The post is offered on a full time, permanent basis (36 hours per week).

Benefits include 25 – 30 days annual leave (depending on the length of Local Government Service), plus one floating day per annum, local government pension scheme, flexible working hours (including some home working), free car parking, free use of leisure facilities, cycle scheme, and access to a large staff roof garden.
