These are exciting time on the Isle of Wight within the Adult Social Care Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards (DoLS) Team, as we are in the process of expanding again and are looking for an enthusiastic and motivated Consultant Practitioner who can work with the Group Manager to lead and support the Team in their work. The Isle of Wight Council has a range of responsibilities under DoLS and the Mental Capacity Act 2005 as a Supervisory Body, so the Consultant Practitioner role is to support the Best Interest Assessors, Doctors and Authorisers; and be involved in managing and developing systems that ensure the Council’s duties are effectively discharged.

The duties will include managing enquiries, referrals, allocation of assessments and authorisations of DoLS requests; as well as work with the DoLS Team Coordinators with the collection and analysis of data for both local and national data returns.

The role requires an appropriate Social Work or health qualification plus valid registration with appropriate body, as well as a Best Interest Assessor (BIA) qualification and evidence of annual BIA Legal Update training.

As a practising Best Interest Assessor, you will be required to have an excellent understanding of the Mental Capacity Act, and its interface with the Mental Health Act.  If interested the applicant will be supported to train to be an Approved Mental Health Professional (AMHP). With the Mental Capacity (Amendment) Act 2019 and the Liberty Protection Safeguards due to be implemented in 2022 the Consultant Practitioner role will be key to introducing new processes to enable the team to adapt to the introduction of this new legal framework; and must be willing to train to be an Approved Mental Capacity professional (AMCP). You will be required to take part in the Out of Hours (OOH) stand-by duty rota as and when requested by management on an occasional basis.

Applicants should have wide experience and a sound knowledge base as a Best Interest Assessor. The applicant will be required to supervise colleagues. You must be able to prioritise and organise tasks in a busy setting and be flexible to manage varying workloads and deadlines.
