As the Fire and Road Safety Manager, your role will focus on preventative work with an emphasis on fire and road safety with the aim of reducing death and injury and promoting the fire and rescue service's key messages.

You will be highly responsible for contributing to the effectiveness of community safety initiatives delivered by our crews and supporting with campaigns and activities that are aimed at preventing house fires, anti-social fires, arson and road traffic collisions and reducing the risk of an emergency happening.

You will be required to support WSFRS statutory duties under the Community Risk Management plan, working closely with operational managers and crews to develop and set objectives in their Local Risk Management Plan's, identifying risk within their station ground and developing engagement activities to reduce the risks. Your professional advice and guidance will be integral to make these engagements positive, effective and efficient.

You will work closely with fire crews and colleagues in the Prevention team and the Communications and Engagement team to develop new ways of working that reduce the number of fire deaths and injuries, as well as reducing the number of people killed or seriously injured on the road.

Using your developed knowledge of multi-agency working, you will work collaboratively with partners such as the SSRP, West Sussex County Council, Schools, colleges and Sussex Police, to represent WSFRS and its interests in a number of multi-agency meetings, with the goal of enabling communities to be stronger and more self-sufficient. You will be supporting a range of large and ongoing projects.

You will need to have emotional resilience to provide support to operational colleagues who work in highly hazardous, physical, and emotionally demanding environments. The role requires travel around the county to attend a wide range of meetings, venues used for campaign events and the delivery of road safety road shows. Some level of physical fitness will also be required to support the set-up of engagement events and assist with the loading and unloading of display stands, gazebo and leaflets.

Experience and Skills

Key Skills:

  1. Highly developed communication skills, especially verbal skills, with the ability to engage, negotiate and influence a range of customers and partners to adopt policies or courses of action that achieve positive outcomes.
  2. Excellent interpersonal and stakeholder management skills along with the ability to deal credibly and sensitively with our customers, senior managers, and executives.
  3. Ability to analyse complex situations and data to provide forward thinking strategies and solutions that consider a variety of possible solutions and balance risks/resources and desired outcomes.
  4. Strong organising and prioritising skills to co-ordinate a variety of tasks in a clear and logical way to meet agreed deadlines whilst effectively managing various demands and overseeing the activities of direct reports, partners and volunteers.
  5. Ability to establish and maintaining positive and productive working relationships with volunteers, internal and external partners.

Qualifications and/or experience:

  • Graduate professional qualification relevant either to management or to the professional service specialism; or equivalent level of significant experience demonstrating applied application of the above levels of knowledge in a relevant setting.
  • Advanced professional organisational and multiagency knowledge across the specialist area of Fire and Road Safety, with the ability to apply knowledge in a range of settings with both internal and external stakeholders in order to promote and defend WSFRS interests, answering questions to create an effective preventive response to road safety county wide.
  • Full UK driving license.
  • Demonstrable experience of dealing with a wide breadth of issues and complex situations and using highly developed analytical skills to provide solution focussed and resource efficient options.
  • Significant experience of processing and analysing large volumes of data and presenting it in a meaningful format.
  • Experience of managing staff and of monitoring a small budget.
  • Experience of working within a risk focussed environment, specifically fire or road safety.
  • Experience of working with a wide range of partners / stakeholders to achieve a common goal - Desirable
  • Experience of working with volunteers or the third sector.
