Here at West Sussex County Council, what we do changes lives. To enable us to continue to provide support and guidance those in our communities. We're looking for a passionate and resilient Librarian to deliver the operational services from Her Majesty's Prison (HMP) Ford Library.

As a Prison Librarian, you will be responsible for the day-to-day management of HMP Ford Library, a category D prison which currently services 379 adult male prisoners. Supported by the Team Manager, you will be responsible for applying your professional library knowledge to resolve a range of issues in an efficient and timely manner. The focus will be on the day-to-day responsibility for HMP Ford Library, a range of physical resources, and delivering a customer focused library service within the prison. This will include the staff engaged in the delivery of the service and supervision of a small team of library staff and peer support workers, recruited from the prison population.

To succeed at this role, you will be required to lead a team to deliver a successful prison library service during a period of change as the prison prepares to grow to 700 prisoners as well the ability to build and maintain strong working relationships to work closely with library staff, prisoners, and colleagues across the library service.

This can be an active role and will sometimes require you to lift or push items of light to moderate weight, for example pushing trolleys and lifting books. There is a regular and intrinsic requirement to communicate in English with members of the public.

This is an exciting opportunity to join the library team at HMP Ford for a 12-month fixed term contract to work alongside the Team Manager - Contracted Services to ensure that the library remains relevant and desirable as the library begins to re-introduce services following COVID and the prison population expands.

The timetable for the current postholder is as follows, although this may be subject to change:

Week 1:

Monday 08:45am - 3:00pm, Tuesday 08:45am-2:30pm, Wednesday 08:45am - 3:00pm, Thursday 08:30am-12:45pm, Friday OFF, Saturday 08:30am-12:00pm.

Week 2:

Monday 08:45am - 3:00pm, Tuesday 08:45am-3:00pm, Wednesday 08:45am - 3:00pm, Thursday 08:30am-12:45pm, Friday OFF, Saturday OFF.

Week 3:

Monday 08:45am - 3:00pm, Tuesday 08:45am-3:00pm, Wednesday 08:45am - 3:00pm, Thursday 08:30am-12:45pm, Friday OFF, Saturday OFF.

Experience and Skills

Key Skills:

  1. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills in order to lead local teams and contribute to wider teams, and to work effectively as part of a team to develop and deliver services to local communities contributing to the delivery of service priorities.
  2. Initiative and independence to respond to queries from colleagues, customers and partners. Ability to work on projects, manage and prioritise personal workload and priorities and contribute to the development of the library service.
  3. Customer service skills and the ability to work with a variety of customer groups in different settings, some of whom present challenging behaviours. Supporting and providing appropriate stock to meet customer needs and queries.
  4. Ability to plan, coordinate and deliver a range of initiatives as appropriate e.g. reading groups, in order to achieve the goals of the service. Supporting and training staff to develop skills.
  5. Ability to present information clearly, concisely, accurately and in ways that promotes understanding, either verbally or in written/electronic form e.g. annual prison report and library action plan.

Qualifications and/or experience:

  • Chartered Librarian, qualified Librarian or working towards ACLIP with degree level qualification or equivalent.
  • European Computer Driving Licence, or equivalent qualification or experience demonstrating good working knowledge of IT systems / procedures.
  • Knowledge and understanding of a library service with a detailed awareness of different types of customers and their specific needs. Understanding of the operational requirements of the day to day running of a library.
  • Previous experience of delivering a customer focused library service within an agreed performance measure, preferably in a prison or specialist library environment.
  • Experience of managing and developing staff, both in terms of their individual development and to create an effective team that works together to meet objectives within agreed timescales.
  • Experience of active participation in library initiatives and activities.
