About Us

In Camden, we are committed to working together to make our borough the best place to live, work, study, and visit. Partnership with our communities is central to the way we work so that everyone can access opportunities, and nobody gets left behind.

This role is based in the Supporting Communities Strategy Team, our team works with teams across the Supporting Communities Directorate developing strategy and policy and putting them into action. For us we make strategy happen by doing things. We also work across the council to develop and support cross-cutting ambitions of being the best place to live, work, and play.

The Role

Camden’s Supporting Communities Strategy Team is seeking a Portfolio Lead to lead strategy, policy, improvement, and transformation in key areas of work across the organisation.

As portfolio lead, you will lead your own projects and support a team of officers to deliver their projects. We’re looking for people with a mindset that is curious, humble, and flexible. Curious to understand what’s really at the heart of a problem, and about other people’s experiences and perspectives. Humble in recognising what they don’t know and expert at working with others with different knowledge and expertise. And flexible to change approach as they learn more, to test things out and adapt what doesn’t work.

You will be working with a wide variety of people, with diverse experiences, you will be developing creative and innovative policies and strategies to achieve key corporate priorities and outcomes. We are looking for someone who can support staff and their teams to get involved in the development of strategy. We strongly believe in the co-design of policy and strategy with our residents and are looking for someone passionate in this area.

Please refer to the job profile for more detailed information about the role.

About You

We believe that designing good policy and strategy requires a broad mix of skills – whether that be research with citizens, co-production, agile delivery experience, strong stakeholder management, data, and analytical expertise, design, and innovation skills to name just a few! We’re a multi-disciplinary team with a wide set of experiences both from within and outside of local government to help us develop great strategy and policy that translates into practical delivery on the ground.

We value diversity of mindset and experience and want our team to represent the diverse community of our Camden residents and so really encourage applications from groups traditionally underrepresented in policy and design fields.

We’d love to receive applications from people from diverse working backgrounds – including frontline service delivery. You will be supported in your development in the team, through having a ‘buddy’, protected time to get up to speed on our ways of working and regular learning and development opportunities including training on agile, human-centred design and invites to regular sessions to discuss and problem solve as a team. People from Black, Asian, and minority ethnic communities and disabled people are traditionally underrepresented in design and policy. We actively encourage candidates who come from personal and professional backgrounds that are typically underrepresented in policy, strategy, and design roles to apply and offer a range of career progression and mentoring programmes as part of Camden’s commitment to equality.
