About the role
Residential Group Worker (Children’s Home Support Worker & Shift Leader)
Acorns in Bexhill, and The Bungalow in Eastbourne, are children’s homes that offer respite and residential support to Children and Young people with learning disabilities aged 7 to 19 years old. Staff work across both services but are assigned to an individual home and become part of a team looking after the children living there.
The homes support children and young people with a range of requirements including complex physical, emotional and challenging behaviour needs. This job can involve undertaking physical restraints (once comprehensive training has been given).
The role can be demanding but rewarding and we are looking for resilient, energetic and creative and people who are ready to contribute to the on-going development of our friendly and caring environments where children are supported to thrive.
Group Workers have a starting hourly rate of £11.92 per hour (including weekend enhancements). Successful candidates who are already qualified to Level 3 Children & Young People Diploma (or equivalent) will commence on a higher pay scale, starting at £13.24 per hour (including weekend enhancements), rising to £14.28 per hour at top of scale.

Day to Day Role
- Leading shifts (after induction and training) and undertaking a key working role
- Caring for, and supporting children and Young people with their day to day lives, creating a nurturing and homely place to live.
- Listening to the children and helping them to express their views, wishes and feelings.
- Helping children to develop life skills, understanding each child’s capabilities and encouraging them to try new things.
- Supporting children during school holidays and at weekends for outings and local activities.
- To work with Children and Young People with a range of needs including significant learning difficulties and challenging behaviour.
- Working with other families and other professionals to understand complex behaviours in order to manage and reduce them.
- To be alert to signs of distress or risk to ensure children are monitored and protected.
- Responding to children and young people in crisis and keeping them safe by following Positive Behaviour Support plans and risk assessments.
- To keep records about the support that is given to each child.
- Life skills, the right attitude and genuine desire to help are abilities that will support our children to thrive.
- Ability to work shifts including weekends and bank holidays, occasional sleep-in shifts and also undertake personal care
- To work as part of a team and use own initiative when required
The successful candidates will work on a rota basis. The post includes shift work, weekend working and sleep-in duties (additional payments for sleep-ins will apply).

Your starting salary will be pro rata if the above position is part-time or term-time only.
