The Local Highway Operations Service provides the operational management of Highways, Countryside and Public Rights of Way for WSCC. Within this service, the Highway Inspection Team manages county-wide safety inspections of over 4000km of our road network to ensure they are safe and serviceable for highway users.

About The Job

Hourly rate: £10.57 - £10.78 per hour, includes annual leave element.
Working Pattern: Casual hours
Location: 2 based in Clapham Depot, Worthing, 1 based in Jobs Depot, Hickstead and 1 based in Drayton Depot, near Chichester
Interview Date: 28 October 2021

We are looking for multiple casual Highway Inspection Drivers to join our team. You will be teamed up with one of our specially trained Highway Inspectors and drive our inspection vehicle on a prescribed route at an appropriate speed whilst the Highway Inspector monitors the highway for any safety defects. Each inspection is likely to last around 4 hours and may involve frequent stopping.

This is a casual role and the drivers are likely be needed for 3-9 days a month.

There may be an occasional need to assist with moving highway obstructions. The role will involve driving in all weathers and may require the wearing of appropriate Personal Protective Equipment.

There is a regular and intrinsic requirement to communicate in English with members of the public

Experience and Skills

As the ideal driver, you will be able to use their initiative, as this role requires the ability to work from instructions whilst being able to make minor decisions, such as route planning to avoid accidents.

You must have a sound knowledge of the theory and application of the Highway Code and be able to apply Health and Safety policies and other relevant requirements.

Key Skills:

  1. Ability to drive a vehicle up to the size of a transit van or similar, with due care and attention and in accordance with the Highway Code regulations and the requirements of the Highway Inspector.
  2. Ability to undertake routine vehicle checks, e.g. tyre pressures, fluid checks.
  3. Ability to work from instruction using initiative and judgement to solve minor problems such as taking alternative routes to avoid accidents.
  4. Ability to follow directions and read maps.

Qualifications and/or experience:

  • Basic numeracy and literacy skills, either through formal qualifications or experience in the workspace.
  • Full, valid UK driving licence with B Class status.
  • Evidence of applying health and safety regulations through previous work experience or on the job training.
  • Experience of driving a van or similar vehicle in a previous work placement.
