Job introduction

Are you passionate about delivering change that has a long-lasting, positive impact on people’s lives and where they live? This is an exciting opportunity to join a service at the forefront of responding to the climate emergency by influencing the way people travel around Brighton & Hove.

We are one of the busiest unitary Highway Authorities and this role will be central to dealing with the transport development aspects of a range of exciting regeneration projects within the city; helping to deliver the aims of the ambitious City Plan and Local Transport Plan, as well as assisting with the city’s economic recovery following the Covid-19 pandemic.

About the role

Join us in Brighton and Hove – a unique, energetic, diverse centre for culture in the South East and an exciting place to develop your career.

The city places emphasis on high-quality, forward-thinking, sustainable development and travel solutions. As a council we are committed to creating a more liveable city in which residents and visitors feel healthier, safer, more socially connected and included.

As Principal Transport Development Officer you will directly influence the shape and ongoing management of new development in the city, ensuring it has a positive effect on highway safety, traffic capacity and the environment, as well as meeting the diverse needs of our community and supporting our ambition to become carbon neutral by 2030. This is a rare opportunity to influence the direction of development in one of England’s busiest unitary Transport services within easy reach of London, and to help shape a new, expanded team to respond flexibly and efficiently to the development demands of the city. You may be interested in the other team roles being advertised alongside this post currently.

As part of the Transport & Highway Development Team you will proactively manage a mixed caseload of major planning applications or the city, provide pre-application advice and secure significant investment in transport infrastructure to meet the needs of our diverse communities and visitors. We are recruiting two Principal Transport Development Officers who will work closely together but have a distinct focus on applications in separate geographical areas.

As the successful candidate you will possess strong negotiation skills and have experience of managing large-scale projects and work packages. You will have a track record of successfully providing high-quality advice, thinking creatively and maximising opportunities to deliver significant change. You’ll also have a strong customer ethos, a collaborative approach and excellent communication skills across a broad range of diverse groups.

As a senior officer you’ll work directly to the Transport and Highway Development Manager, helping set the strategic direction for City Transport and development in the city. You will be based in our modern, open plan offices in the city centre and benefit from flexible working, including home-working. Joining an enthusiastic and supportive team, you’ll collaborate with colleagues from a range of fields, working closely with the Planning service and Transport Project teams to deliver transport infrastructure changes across the city.

In light of the Covid-19 pandemic special arrangements will be made with respect to interviews, ensuring a safe interview process and equality of access for all participants.

This role is politically restricted.  For further information on what this means for employees in post, please click on the document attachment below.

Interview date: w/c 15 November 2021

As part of your application, you will need to complete your education and work history and provide answers to some shortlisting questions.
