Salary: £19,312 to £19,698 per annum (£12,255 to £12,500 per annum, pro rata)
Working Pattern: Part-time (27.5 hours per week)

Here at West Sussex County Council, what we do changes lives. As an assistant cook, you will be a valued part of our catering team based at Manor Green College, Crawley. We're looking for a committed and highly motivated assistant cook to provide healthy and freshly produced school meals.
You will be required to assist the Cook Supervisor in the preparation, cooking, service clearing and cleaning of the kitchen environment within the required standards, ensuring hygiene and safety measures are maintained at all times. You'll also need to oversee staff in the absence of, or alongside, the Cook Supervisor when required.
The successful candidate will be able to thrive in a fast-paced environment within a prescribed time frame. It's also an active role - for example, you'll be lifting, moving and handling large equipment frequently. There is a regular and intrinsic requirement to communicate in English with members of the public.
To carry out this role you will need good communication and interpersonal skills to support pupils with their life skills. You will need to be understanding of the differing needs of young people with special educational needs. You will have a flexible approach to working to produce a high standard service and a positive approach to working within a team.
Experience and Skills
- Ability to prepare and cook nutritious meals to a high standard within the required budget.
- Great interpersonal and communication skills, both verbally and written, in order to be able to interact with a range of customers and stakeholders including pupils with special needs.
- Good numeracy and literacy in order to complete records, design menus and submit returns as required.
- Ability to supervise the team and manage the service with support in the absence of the Cook Supervisor.
- Ability to maintain high standards following legislation and Government Standards.
Qualifications and/or experience:
- City & Guilds 706/1 & 2 or NVQ level 2 in Catering.
- Level 2 Food Safety.
- Experience in catering on a large scale, preparing, cooking fresh food from scratch.
- Experience of working as part of a team.
- Some experience of supervising staff or running a catering service - Desirable.
