About The Job
Salary Range: £6,270 - £10,660 pro rata, per annum
Work Location: Countywide including Worthing, Chichester, Horsham, Burgess Hill
Contract type: Permanent, term time only (39 weeks, plus 5.2 weeks annual leave)
Hours per week: 15 - 25 hours per week (Split Shift: 7am -10am / 2pm - 5pm)

We are currently recruiting to multiple Passenger Assistant vacancies across the county.
Working as part of the Passenger Assistant Team, you will travel to and from schools and other venues, in minibuses, cars and taxis with vulnerable adults and school children with special needs, to ensure they are safely transported.
You will be supporting children with special needs on their way to and from school or college. You will also need to support vulnerable adults on their journeys to and from day centres, training courses and other venues.
You will provide a safe, secure and happy environment for passengers, while in transit between destinations. You will also ensure that the passengers safely board and alight from the vehicles and that they are delivered to their venue in a safe way.
You will interpret situations and events as they arise in order to solve straightforward problems concerning the wellbeing of the passenger or smooth running of the journey as well as fasten seat belts, attach booster seats and ensure that passengers are properly and safely seated in conjunction with the driver and any other passenger assistants in the vehicle, to ensure that all equipment, such as wheelchairs, are carefully stowed and secured when in transit.
You will work collaboratively and convey messages between the school and the pupil's parents about their health and wellbeing.
Experience and Skills
You will be a positive role model in your interactions with children and adults using the service. You will be familiar with, and adhere to, the values of WSCC and be compliant with key regulations i.e. Health and Safety/Safeguarding, standards and procedures. Physically, you will be able to undertake all the required driving and maintenance aspects of the role. Most importantly, you will be able to work as part of a committed and dynamic team to achieve the shared goal of delivering consistent and outstanding service.
1.Very good communication skills, in order to communicate effectively with adults and children with special needs, their carers, family members and teachers; reporting any problems to parents, carers, teachers etc. and transferring information between the different venues (for example, school
and home). This includes the ability to convey urgent messages by mobile telephone.
2.High levels of patience and sensitivity, able to deal effectively with adults and children with either medical or behavioural needs, calmly and with care for their wellbeing.
3.Basic literacy and numeracy skills in order to answer questions from the passengers, fill in time sheets and write incident reports.
4.Able to understand and communicate in basic non-verbal signals -such as an adult unable to speak pointing to something they want. A basic understanding of Makaton in order to communicate with those passengers with learning difficulties.
Qualifications and/or experience:
- Previous experience working with, or caring for, children or adults, in some capacity, including voluntary work, paid work or through family commitments.
- Knowledge of how to operate and secure items such as booster seats, wheel chairs and similar devices.
- Basic first aid training.
