Barnsley is a fantastic place in which to live, work, invest and visit. We're an award-winning council working together with partners to improve economic, social and physical wellbeing across the borough. With exciting developments, such as the recently announced South Yorkshire devolution deal, we’re poised to deliver inclusive economic growth to benefit all our residents. And with the recently opened Market Kitchen and the Glassworks development set for completion in 2021 we’re firmly on the cultural map.
This role will be key to the success of our new Corporate Plan 2021 – 24 and our big ambitions for Barnsley in 2030; particularly around health, growth and sustainability. Barnsley Council declared a climate emergency in September 2019 and set out its aims to achieve net-zero carbon within the council by 2040, and across the borough by 2045. Our Sustainable Energy Action Plan (SEAP) 2020-2025, sets out how we will deliver on these commitments; setting ambitious targets to reduce emissions within our borough by 65% (against a 2017 baseline) by 2025. You will also play a major role in shaping our emerging Environment Strategy.
We are working hard to ensure that everyone in the Borough has a safe, warm and energy efficient home; developing affordable warmth programmes and tackling fuel poverty.
We are developing innovative solutions to embed sustainability across all areas of our activity.
Barnsley is a robust agile Council generating positive change for the borough and its residents and you will be very much at the heart of that.
You’ll be responsible for a diverse portfolio of exciting low carbon and affordable warmth projects and programmes at scale, attracting external funding and investment from both the private and public sector and maximising business opportunities. We’re looking for someone with a real commitment to tackling climate change, fuel poverty and health inequalities who has, or can quickly build, an understanding of the Barnsley context working with a variety of partners and our ALMO, Berneslai Homes.
You will need creativity, good interpersonal skills and a sharp delivery focus to lead your team in support of our vision.
At Barnsley Council we very much adopt a One Council approach, and you will be supported by a range of other internal teams within the Regeneration and Culture service as well as a wide range of business partners across the Council. You’ll also find a positive working culture, where innovation and forward-thinking is warmly welcomed. Are you ready to lead a team contributing to a better Barnsley?
