The starting salary for this role is £12,948 per annum and is based on a 24 hour working hour week.
Surrey is one of the largest county councils in the UK and has over 50 libraries across the county. Our library teams deliver a range of services to all members of the public. Times have changed from when all that libraries offered was to lend books and access to a reference collection. Pre-Covid, Library Assistants would help branches support a range of online reference resources, hold computer classes, Rhymetimes and Storytimes, and various other events such as Minecraft sessions and Code Clubs. We also offered a range of services, including library services for the elderly or disabled. We aim to deliver these services again as Covid restrictions ease.
We are looking for a friendly and enthusiastic person, to help us promote and deliver a first class and transforming library service for the people of Surrey.
The successful applicant will have good computer skills, with the ability to support library customers with MS Office and other IT applications. Usually, Library Assistants also deliver children's activities including Rhymetimes and Storytimes, and support other library events, for example, author talks and IT sessions for customers – we hope to offer these services again as Covid restrictions ease.

We are looking for the following key skills from potential applicants:
- Assist with enquiries as required
- Take part in Rhymetime and Storytime
- Support library events as required, e.g. craft session
- Ensure borrower records are kept up to date
- Occasionally working at other branches within the local area
To be shortlisted to interview for this position, your application will clearly evidence:
- Knowledge of using Microsoft Office packages
- Ability to use initiative and work under pressure with accuracy
- A basic understanding of working in a library
- Positive working attitude towards training and development.

This post operates on a two week rota including working alternate Saturdays
Please note that the rota is subject to temporary or long term revision, when required, to meet the needs of the library service.
Pre-Covid, Library Assistants at Haslemere Library would also regularly support Godalming and Cranleigh Libraries, which are in the same group, and travel to other locations to support the wider library network as required. We are aiming to return to this way of working as restrictions ease.
