Hertfordshire Music Service (HMS) are seeking an enthusiastic and musically knowledgeable project officer to assist in the operational and strategic management of its instruments and equipment portfolio.
HMS is one of the largest and most successful music services in the Country, with a national reputation for excellence, opportunity and delivering common good activities. With over 560 instrumental and vocal teachers teaching over 10,000 children in schools and our music centres across the county, HMS has a complex staffing structure and a wide reach, with a presence in most major Hertfordshire towns.
This new, exciting role directly contributes to the continued transformation of HMS through supporting the service to realise its ambitious ‘Musical Voices’ vision.
In filling this exciting opportunity, we are looking for a candidate who is; musically knowledgeable, well organised, able to prioritise, proactive, has work experience/qualification with a musical instrument repairer or supplier, can evidence relevant experience within instrument management, knowledge of multiple instrument types (e.g. strings, woodwind, brass), has repair expertise in at least one instrument type, is IT literate, particularly with database systems and spreadsheet software, has experience of organising stock or logistics, has experience of working in music education or working with a music education organization, has a full and clean driving license.
We are particularly interested in candidates with a values alignment to Hertfordshire County Council and who are drawn to the moral purpose of Hertfordshire Music Service.
The successful candidate will work with the Customer & Systems Operations Manager to develop and implement an instrument management strategy, enabling HMS to deliver the current and any future National Plan for Music Education and the music hub core and extension roles as set by Arts Council England. An impactful role both in the short and long-term, it is anticipated that in the short term, the postholder will increase income generation, improve instrument management and logistics, while also creating a long-term strategy that links instrument stock more closely to all tuition needs.

Able to demonstrate work experience/qualification with a musical instrument repairer or supplier
Knowledge of multiple instrument types (e.g. strings, woodwind, brass)
Able to demonstrate repair expertise in at least one instrument type
Computer literate, particularly with database systems and spreadsheet software
Experienced in organising stock or logistic
Experienced in music education or working with a music education organisation
Full and clean driving licence
Comfortable with a ‘rolling our sleeves up’ mentality
Able to work to a high level of professional integrity and creditable in your personal brand, ensuring our wide array of stakeholders have confidence in their HMS colleagues.
