About us

The LGA is the national voice of local government. We work with councils to support, promote and improve local government.

We are a politically led, cross-party organisation that works on behalf of councils to ensure local government has a strong, credible voice with national government. We aim to influence and set the political agenda on the issues that matter to councils, so that they are able to deliver local solutions to national problems. The LGA also provides a range of practical support to enable councils to exploit the opportunities that ‘sector-led improvement’ provides.  There has never been a more exciting time to work for us.

We value diversity and encourage applications from all sections of the community to this high-profile role.

The role

Councils have worked tirelessly to support their residents and businesses throughout the pandemic. As we start to emerge from the crisis, creating good jobs alongside education and training opportunities will be essential to local recovery efforts that are both sustainable and inclusive.

The LGA has a strong track record of making the case for councils to have the powers and resources to deliver an effective and responsive employment and skills offer for their local communities and ensure their leadership role is at the heart of the Government’s Plan for Jobs and wider objective to level up.

The successful candidate will join a dynamic, highly performing policy team. They will have the opportunity to work closely with colleagues across the LGA, our member councils, stakeholders and Government on a policy area that is key to a successful economic recovery. The work is varied so we are looking for an all-rounder who is looking to build on their skills in developing policy, commissioning research, and working directly with councils and politicians.

The requirements

You will have the knowledge, experience and credibility to engage with government and organisations from across the public, private and voluntary sectors. You will be able to take a strategic, forward-looking approach, have political awareness and develop effective relationships with external partners and national government.

The person we offer this post to will be an excellent communicator, problem solver and team player, as well as having the ability for self-directed research and independent work. Your ability to grasp issues quickly and adapt to a rapidly shifting context will make you stand out. You will have experience using a range of communication tools, including social media, in a politically sensitive environment. While not essential experience of working in local government or a similar environment and knowledge of the employment and skills landscape is desirable.

You must have the right to work in the UK, the LGA are unfortunately unable to offer sponsorship visas. Evidence for the right to work in the UK will be requested at the interview stage.

Please note the Job Description is generic, with details of the role outlined above.
