This is an exciting opportunity to join us and play a role in the improving West Berkshire’s highways. Working within the ITS & Sustainable Travel team assisting in the delivery of the Environment Department’s Capital Programme.
Pay and Grading:
The position is career graded, which means there are three defined levels for the post offered – Trainee Technician, Technician or Senior Technician. Which level you start at will depend on your qualifications and experience. Reading the job descriptions will help you determine the appropriate starting level. For those starting on the lower grades we offer training and support, including further relevant education to enable advancement. We invite applications from those that meet the minimum level (5 GCSE’s and no experience) through to those that meet or exceed the Senior Technician level (HNC or equivalent plus three years’ relevant experience).
Our Network Management Team is part of the Environment Department and consists of five smaller sub teams. We generally look after most highway improvement undertaken on our highway’s network. We are responsible for a variety of projects which can include anything from building a major new junction to minor footpath improvements.
The Intelligent Transport Systems sub team cover traffic signals, pedestrian crossings and intelligent traffic systems such as Urban Traffic Control (UTC). The team maintains and improves existing systems as well as commissioning new traffic signal junctions and crossings. Also responsible for sustainable travel infrastructure which covers cycling, walking and charging points for electric cars.
As a minimum you will need to have good customer communication skills as you will be dealing with customers on a regular basis. You will need a driving licence or be working towards one. Good ability in writing and numerical skills with knowledge of Word and Excel. Above all you will need to fit into a dynamic productive team with a genuine desire to assist in the continual improvement to our highway network and an interest in what we do.
Dependent on the role, responsibilities will include involvement in a variety of highway projects ranging in size and value. This will include, compiling bills of quantities, drafting minor scheme designs using AutoCAD, utility services checks as well as assisting the wider team and other departments whilst working closely with contractors, stakeholders and the public.
