If so, then this could be the job for you. Brighton & Hove City Council is seeking to appoint a responsible, professionally qualified and experienced individual to lead its small team of dedicated arborists.

We are looking for someone who can take charge of the existing team and to be the main point of contact to liaise between staff and management.

You will need to be both an accomplished climber and team leader; able to lead by example, motivate and mange a small team. You must also have previous experience in a similar role, be conscious of the strict health and safety environment in which you are working and be a motivated, able to work under pressure and to tight deadlines.

About the role

The city of Brighton & Hove has a vast and diverse treescape comprising parkland, woodland and over 16,000 street trees and is home to the National Elm Collection.  The council’s Arboricultural Service is responsible for maintaining all those aspects to a highly professional and safe standard. 

The Arboricultural Service is seeking to employ an experienced, full-time, Arborist Team Leader.  Reporting directly to the Arboricultural Manager, the successful candidate will be responsible for the supervision and leadership of a small team of qualified arborists. The ideal candidate should be self-motivated, hard-working, and able to ensure their team delivers arboricultural works within in agreed timeframes to a high standard.

The role of Arborist Team Leader requires a wide range of arboricultural experience.  The post holder will require a strong focus on Health and Safety: that of staff, the workplace, of property and the public.

Contracted working hours are 37 per week, Monday to Friday, and candidates must also be available to participate in the out-of-hours emergency call-out rota.

Duties of the role will include:

  • To manage a small team of qualified arborists.
  • To work to a tree pruning rota and other priority works instructions and to make day-to-day decisions as to how work is completed within set timeframes.
  • To monitor, review and maintain team and individual performance. 
  • To inform team members of Council, Service and arboricultural priorities, Health and Safety, customer satisfaction, new working practices, initiatives and work.
  • To communicate effectively and appropriately with the public.
  • To complete routine written and digital records, including risk assessments, equipment checks, health monitoring forms, time sheets, vehicle logs, etc. and to operate a tree management software system, i.e. ARBORtrack.

We are seeking a thoroughly experienced, appropriately qualified and responsible professional who can demonstrate the following qualities:

  • NVQ Level 3 Arboriculture or equivalent or significant comparable experience
  • Certificates in a wide range of arboricultural operation essential to fulfil the role, as a minimum CS 30, 31, 38, 39, 40 & 41.
  • Experience of supervising and training a team of arborists with a track record of providing quality works to British Standards
  • Proven record of experience of all aspects of modern arboricultural works
  • An expert understanding of Health & Safety legislation relating to tree works, staff welfare and equipment
  • Practical experience in pest and disease control, including Elm Disease
  • Control and co-ordination of staffing requirements to ensure completion of efficient, effective and safe tree works operations
  • Practical experience of assessing dangerous trees and situations
  • Effective communication and negotiation skills when dealing with staff and all sectors of the community.

Contracted working hours are 37 per week, Monday to Friday.

Your starting salary will be pro rata if the above position is less than 37 hours or term-time only.
