Senior Web Developer
Grade 14 (£44,790 - £46,839pa based on 36hrs per week)

About Croydon Counci
Croydon is London’s second largest borough - a city within the city, full of brilliant and diverse people, businesses and places.

As a council we’re going through tremendous change, from our evolving response to the pandemic, to our plans to radically reshape and renew our organisation as a result of financial challenges. We are essentially building a brand new council around ourselves – one that is focused on getting things right for its residents, while delivering very differently and within a sustainable financial envelope.

About the Croydon Digital Service
Digital capability and service redesign is critical to our renewal plans.

Established in 2019, the Croydon Digital Service (CDS) is one part of the council that has already transformed, replacing a traditional ICT department with a GDS-style service to support the digital transformation of the council’s internal operations and online services for residents. We are a small and creative team that achieves a lot with a little. We continuously iterate our culture and processes to enable all team members to bring their whole selves and do their best work.

We are signatories of the Local Digital Declaration, committing us to delivering user-centred services that meet the Government Service Standard, and to following the Technology Code of Practice. We seek to collaborate, wherever possible, with other local authorities to share learnings, ideas and solutions.

We work in the open, inviting feedback and input from our stakeholders. You can see examples of our work at www.croydon.digital – a site we share with the local tech community.

About the role
We are looking for a Senior Web Developer to work as part of Croydon’s digital team and with key project teams. You will be responsible for developing web sites and web front and back ends in accordance with our development framework in an agile environment, including design, development and integration of digital solutions.

Responsibilities
Develop, maintain and operate the technologies that power the corporate website, intranet, and a number of other online products the council provides for staff and residents - delivering and integrating backend and frontend software to form a complete service.

Deliver end to end digital experiences using a wide range of modern technology, including Wordpress, Drupal 8, and PHP.

Build, maintain and improve the user-facing parts of the main council website and other sites and the new design system to be adopted by all services the council builds from now on; ensuring they work in all browsers, on all devices, and meet stringent accessibility standards.

Work in multi-disciplinary delivery teams within the Croydon Digital Service to ensure applications are delivered into live service using best practise and are supported and maintained during their lifecycle enabling the Council to obtain full value from its investment.

Experience

  • Experience of web development and digital services with Cloud technology.
  • Experience developing responsive web and mobile sites
  • Worked in an environment where the user is at the heart of all digital development work.
  • Worked in a team-oriented, collaborative environment
  • Continuous improvement of processes and procedures.
  • Worked in Agile environments.
  • Experience of working in an environment with competing priorities or demanding workloads.

What’s in it for you?
This is an exciting opportunity to work for a Council with plans to change and renew and which genuinely wants to develop their technology setup to improve customer experience.

We invest in our employees to help develop and achieve professional goals whilst also providing you with the opportunity to work with brilliant minds and be part of an exceptional high performing team.

We also have a generous benefits package.

Croydon Council is transforming – come and be part of building a new council
