About the role
The services delivered by the Communities, Economy and Transport department (CET) have an enormous impact on the lives of local people and the natural environment. From operating waste facilities and registration offices, to maintaining roads and major infrastructure planning, the moment an East Sussex resident steps outside their front door, they are interacting with our work. Therefore, roles in our department offer enormous scope to make a positive impact on the quality of life for people and the environment of East Sussex. We are looking for people who can help us to improve the links between the areas we operate in, such as using libraries, improving adult literacy, transporting vulnerable people to the shops to help keep them independent or installing high speed broadband to support businesses to modernise.
Within the Transport Hub, we provide vital connections into the public transport network across the county to help people go about their daily lives, from getting their shopping done to visiting family and friends. We transport thousands of children to school every day, we provide transport for some of the most vulnerable people in our area and we help people who don’t have the opportunity to access public or private transport. We help public transport services to change and adapt to infrastructure and demands, by doing things like supporting the introduction of real-time passenger information at bus stops or re-routing services around roadworks. Ultimately, we see it as our job to “keep the wheels running” around the county.
We provide minibus transport for older people and adults with learning disabilities to day centres throughout East Sussex.
To help us in this vital work, we are seeking Relief Drivers/Passenger Assistants to join our transport teams in the Lewes, Eastbourne and Hastings areas.
In this casual role, you will provide ad-hoc holiday and sickness cover for our permanent Driver and Passenger Assistant staff.
This role is particularly suited to those who are flexible and are able to accept work at short notice.
Shift times will vary depending on location, however in most cases drivers will be offered 'split shifts' between the hours of 7.45am and 8:00pm, Monday to Friday.
Our minibuses are 16-seater vehicles. Drivers are required to have a full, valid UK driving licence with category D1.
This post is subject to an Enhanced DBS check or Enhanced check for Regulated Activity with the Disclosure & Barring Services (previously the Criminal Records Bureau). For further information about what is required in this process please go to http://www.gov.uk/disclosure-barring-service-check. Please note that we require evidence of an overseas police check if you have lived or worked abroad.
Your starting salary will be pro rata if the above position is part-time or term-time only.
Work Permits: we may be able to obtain a Work Permit for this post but this is subject to meeting the requirements of the UK Border Agency’s Points-based Immigration System.
Due to the restrictions we cannot guarantee that individuals that meet the requirements of the Points-based Immigration System will be issued with clearance to obtain work permits.
