This is an exciting opportunity to join the Council’s Gypsy and Traveller Unit playing a critical role in helping the new unit be as effective and efficient as possible. The unit is a dedicated front-line resource covering a broad range of Gypsy and Traveller issues taking a balanced approach to engagement, support, compliance and enforcement. This area of work is both challenging and complex, but success delivers tangible, positive rewards and outcomes.
The unit works with services across the Council and also external partners.
You will contribute to the operational development and function of the unit by organising and operating the back-office support for the unit. You will be responsible for creating and developing different ways of working to help support the front line officers in line with the Council’s corporate approach to managing Gypsy and Traveller issues in Central Bedfordshire.
You will act as the first point of contact for the Unit, co ordinating and allocating enquiries from the public that the team receive, as part of the critical back-office function.
You will manage and coordinate a range of programmes, including, support for encampment work, enforcement work and engagement work for the team. You will also be responsible for managing the collation of court/planning files for enforcement prosecutions making sure they meet the required evidential standards.
You will have demonstrable experience of working in a busy and challenging team environment and have solid administration, organisation and IT skills, which will be used in the day to day operation of the unit. The ideal candidate will have experience of working in an enforcement discipline.
You will support the officers with their work, by providing adequate back-office support and fully utilise case management systems for the officers.
With the unit manager you will identify efficiencies in processes and systems and implement those efficiencies which will support the officer’s work.
You will have demonstrable experience of working in a busy team environment working under pressure. You should have the ability to work independently and be comfortable to work remotely at home, linking in with your team through video technology as well as more conventional means.
You will be able to demonstrate your ability to manage a coordinate a range of programmes successfully and you will be able to prepare reports including performance information. You will be able to show how you have implemented systems to improve efficiency and you will enjoy working in a small but very busy team. Some of the issues you will face will need tenacity, empathy, patience and understanding.
You will need excellent communication, partnership and collaboration skills to work to resolve what can often be very challenging issues. You will be committed to delivering high standards and have excellent attention to detail and you will be committed to delivering excellent customer service and enjoy working in a team focused on delivering tangible outcomes.
