Rough Sleeper Navigator

£25,991 - £28,672 per annum

Exmouth Town Hall and Blackdown House, Honiton

Full time, Fixed Term for up to twelve months

About us

East Devon is independently recognised as an outstanding place and so it follows that its council must also strive to be outstanding.  Everything we do is aimed at ensuring that East Devon is a place that people want to live in, work in, visit and enjoy.  Our ambition is to be an outstanding council which works together with local people to create great value services and an outstanding community, economy and environment for East Devon, now and for future generations.

About the role

In this interesting and varied position, you’ll play a crucial role in the resettlement of rough sleepers, providing a comprehensive service to a caseload of clients who are currently sleeping rough or who have a recent history of rough sleeping in East Devon.  Building trust and providing person centred advocacy and support which enables clients to navigate pathways and progress towards a life away from the streets.

You’ll undertake assertive street outreach sessions and hot spot visits, including during unsocial hours, to engage with people sleeping rough from their first point of contact and encouraging long-term change. You’ll also support close partnership working with the housing, health and wellbeing services, police, emergency accommodation providers and wider partner agencies to maximise positive outcomes for clients.

About you

With a good standard of education, you’ll ideally have experience of working with homeless people and an understanding of the needs of rough sleepers.  With good communication skills, you’ll be diplomatic, tactful and empathetic, and have the resilience to work flexibly and creatively with individuals with complex needs.

You’ll also need to be able to build good working relationships with clients, colleagues and partnership organisations.  Previous experience of working in partnership with a range of statutory and voluntary agencies would be an advantage.

A driving licence is essential to this role as you’ll need to travel as required (reasonable adjustments may be possible according to the Equality Act).
