This fundamental role within Adult Social Care undertakes the statutory function of assessments as required under the Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards (DoLS) process.
You will be expected to work within organisational, policy and legislative requirements, work independently and within timescales to carry out complex DoLS assessments and work within this specialist area providing expertise and guidance to colleagues.

The role of Best Interest Assessor within the Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards (DoLS) team aims to provide an essential and highly valued statutory service to safeguard the human rights of people in hospitals and care homes.
As a qualified Social Worker, you will work within the legal frameworks of the Mental Capacity Act (2005) and the Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards, drawing on your experience and knowledge of social work practice to complete assessments for service users who have been referred to the DoLS team. You will ensure the guiding principals of the Mental Capacity Act are at the heart of your Best Interest Assessor (BIA) practice and decision-making.
You will use your knowledge to suggest any conditions that might reduce the need for ongoing deprivation of liberty or lessen the impact of the deprivation on the relevant person. You will frame any conditions so that they apply to such matters that the managing authority can control, rather than general care planning, and discuss any conditions in advance of setting them to ensure that the managing authority can comply.
Experience and Skills
- Demonstrable knowledge, understanding and application of relevant legislation and statutory guidance.
- Build relationships which support person centred social work, involving the person in all decision making and building on strengths and capabilities.
- Work under pressure and cope with the unexpected, responding calmly to emotive situations and seeking appropriate support and solutions.
- Write comprehensive, clear, concise and accurate records and reports to facilitate decision making.
- Able to organise your workload to meet statutory timescales and deadlines.
Qualifications and Experience:
- Qualified Social Worker and Best Interest Assessor.
- SWE registered.
- Eligible to work in the UK.
- Significant post qualifying experience.
