Your New Role

To successfully design and deliver highway schemes from inception through to completion. Schemes will range from small junction improvements through to multi-million pound major projects. You will propose scheme options and prepare designs from inception through to detailed design and subsequent implementation in accordance with current national and local design standards and policies; giving due consideration to health and safety, equalities and sustainability. You will establish agreed solutions with interested parties, which meet engineering and environmental considerations. You will establish achievable scheme programmes and manage external consultants, as well as project staff to ensure targets are achieved. You will prepare estimates, monitor and review project costs to ensure completion within agreed budgets. You will prepare tender and assess contract documentation, to ensure the construction of works on site are to programme and within project budget. You will also provide technical input and project management throughout the construction period. You will represent the team and ultimately City Council at meetings, to assist and carry out consultations on scheme proposals and to advise members as necessary. You will maintain personal technical expertise in new methods and technologies, encourage engineers/assistant engineers to pursue personal development through effective supervision and allocation of work.

 

What you’ll need to succeed

You will be educated to HND or degree standard in Civil Engineering (or equivalent) and hold an appropriate professional qualification (e.g. CEng or IEng, together with membership of the appropriate professional body e.g. MICE) or demonstrated performance over a substantial period at this level. A suitable project management qualification e.g. Prince 2 is desirable. You will be able to carry out engineering projects with values exceeding £1m from initiation through to completion without continual direction. You will have an excellent level of technical expertise and good experience of contract documentation preparation. You will be able to lead small project teams through delegation and management, be able to accept responsibility for significant decision making processes and train/mentor engineers/assistant engineers as required. You will have an excellent commercial awareness. The ability to converse at ease with customers and provide advice in accurate spoken English is essential for the post.
