Opportunity to join Sussex Police and Crime Panel.

About the opportunity

The Sussex Police and Crime Panel is looking for two enthusiastic and strategically minded people from the Sussex area to serve as co-opted independent members.

The Police and Crime Panel scrutinises the performance of Sussex Police and Crime Commissioner, to ensure transparency, and to provide checks and balances in relation to the Commissioner’s actions and decisions. The Panel comprises councillors drawn from each of the 15 local authorities within the region, and two independent members. The Panel meets formally four times a year, face to face in Lewes, East Sussex. This is currently dependant on COVID-19 restrictions so until restrictions are lifted these can also take place remotely, with members joining from their homes using their personal computers.

The Independent members, through their knowledge and experience, enhance the Panel’s ability to hold the Commissioner to account.

There is no salary for the role, but travel expenses can be reclaimed.

About you

Applicants should live within the Sussex area (East Sussex, West Sussex or Brighton and Hove). Experience in community safety, victim support, criminal justice and related issues would be helpful, but is not essential. The work of the Panel is evidence-based, and skills in data analysis and performance management are valued, as is experience of the community and voluntary sector. Basic knowledge of MS Office.

The deadline for applications is 5pm on Friday 14 May 2021. Interviews for shortlisted candidates will be conducted on Friday 4 June 2021. These interviews will be held in Lewes or remotely via video call.

The ability to scrutinise and challenge: To be able to rigorously scrutinise and challenge constructively, and exercise effective oversight of all aspects of the PCC’s performance, using appropriate data, evidence and resources.

The ability to be analytical: The ability to interpret and question complex written material, including financial and statistical information and other data such as performance measures, and identify the salient points.

The ability to communicate effectively: To be able to explain issues clearly, often in public meetings, with the media present, and to engage in constructive dialogue with local communities, the police (including representatives of their staff associations) and other key partners and agencies.

The ability to manage time effectively: To be able to identify priorities and make the most productive use of own and others’ time.
